COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The main objectives of the course are:


1. To make students aware, about the different types of bridges.
2. To make them ready to understand design philosophy.
3. To mould them to be ready to inspect brides & suggest
remedial measures if needed.

On the successful completion of this course students will be able to:

2. To understand design philosophy & design procedure.
3. To carry out inspection & suggest remedial measures if needed.
COURSE CONTENTS:

Introduction: Definition & History, Classification, Planning for a Bridge &


Stages of Planning.
Type of Bridges & Loading Standards: Classification & Components,
Need for Loading Standards, Loading Requirements, Railway Loading
Standards, Road Bridge Loading, Any Important topic in the relevant unit.
Super-Structure Design Aspects: Historical Development, Types of
Bridges & Choice of Materials, Design Principles, Design Procedure for
Bridge Super Structure, Composite Construction, Any Important topic in
the relevant unit.
Inspection & Maintenance of Bridges: Necessary for Inspection of
Bridges, Procedure & Aspects of Inspection, Testing of Bridges, Aids for
Bridge Inspection & Maintenance, Maintenance of Bridge Substructure &
Superstructure, Advances in Bridge Engineering, Any advance topic in
bridge engineering.
Note: The course shall be based on the following codes of practice: BS
5400, BS6399, ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers Manual) and CP3 or other
applicable standard/manual.
