The Main Idea of Story: “Forbidden Fare”

The story “Forbidden Fare” revolves around the discussion of forbidden foods that are

being consumed by people anyway. In other words, the author Orhan Pamuk has mentioned

the story of a young boy from Istanbul, who desires to eat food such as burgers and

sandwiches, etc. which are made of unknown meat from unknown parts of the animals.

Thereby, the author highlights the reality of every home in turkey because of the difference in

culture. However, the story also reveals the traditional customs of Islamic culture because

people who follow Islam do not eat the meat of every animal. Hence, in Turkey, people take

care while eating meat and meaty stuff such as sandwiches and burgers. In addition to this,

the impact of the cold war has also highlighted since the author reveals in the story that

names of food are also changes such as Russian salad to American salad. The author has

made this story interesting by adding some funny sub-stories and dialogues. Autor has also

exposed the common belief of the people and mothers, especially that the food you get from

the market is unknown, unhealthy, and is made by the strangers. Whereas, the youngsters

believe that the dirt and strange ingredients in the forbidden food increase the taste.

I believe this story reflects that there are certain myths and perceptions which are

made about the food due to the change in culture, religion, and time as well. Though, these

myths are not actually myths because the food sold on the streets can be unhealthy,

unhygienic and can be of any animal which can affect the health. But at the same time, food

preserved and served in a good way looks tasty and healthy. Therefore, I really enjoyed this

story and do agree with the main idea highlighted therein which is all about the reality of

forbidden food.
