Title: Organic Reactions

Aim: 1) To compare the reactions of unsaturated and saturated compounds with KMNO 4/H+ and
K2Cr2O7/H+

2) To prepare an Ester

Apparatus: 25.0 cm3 pipette, 50.00 cm3 burette, 25.0 cm3 conical flasks, 25.0 cm3 plastic beakers, filter
funnel, pipette dropper, retort stand, clamp, white tile, water bottle

Materials: 0.1 moldm-3 HNO3 (aq) , NaOH (aq), phenolphthalein, distilled water

Procedure: A volumetric pipette was used to add 25.0cm 3 of the NaOH solution to a conical flask. 1-3
drops of phenolphthalein indicator was added to the conical flask. A 50.0cm 3 burette was filled with the
0.1 HNO3 solution and the initial reading of the burette was recorded. The 0.1 moldm 3 HNO3 solution
was then gradually added to the NaOH solution in the conical flask until the colour changed from pink
to colourless. The final reading of the burette was the noted. The procedure was repeated twice and
with a total of three readings. The average volume of the HNO 3 used in the titration was then calculated.
