The Passive Voice

Passive is often used by English future, it is a mistake to think that it is only used in
formal speech and is also used informally quite a bit.
 You don’t want to say who or what did the action
 You don’t know who did the action
 The object is the most impoitant part of the sentence
So that the thing that is happening is not a matter of taking action.
The active voice:
 The chidren ate the cake
Subject + verb + object
 The cake was eaten by somebody
 English speakers kreguently use the passive voice
- The passive voice is freguenty used by englis speakers
Some very passive expressions:
- (to) be born
I was born on june 25rd, 1989
If the active sentence is “children eat cake” the passive sentence is “the cake is eaten by
children”. Then the active sentence becomes the subject and passive sentences to make the object
of the active sentence become the subject. We actually need to change a few things in the
sentence. To make passive sentences we need to form sentences. There are 6 steps to change an
active sentence into a passive sentence.
- Identify the subject, the verb and the object
- Move the object to become the now subject of the sentence
- What is the verb tense in the active sentence?
- Conjugate the verb ‘be’
- Add the past participant of the main verb after ‘be’
- Subject of the active sentence
