Question 11-19

THE HISTORY OF AIRPORTS

Airport in the past
You may often hear the terms airport, airfield, and aerodromes, and yes, they mean similar
things. They are the place for aircrafts to take off and land. In the past, airports were not as
sophisticated as those we know today. In the beginning of its development, an airport was
simply an open field to test whether the aircrafts could fly or not. The field was covered with
grass or dirt. Aircrafts also could land and took off from any direction so long as the wind
direction was favourable. Because of this limitation, aircrafts can be operated only in good
weather. In the rain, the field became muddy and couldn’t be used by the aircrafts. To solved
this problems, paved runways and taxiways was built. Then, supporting equipment such as
hangar, wind socks, and weather equipment were built to support the aircrafts operation.
Airports during WW I and II
The development of airports is in line with the improvement of aircrafts. Airport specification
was adjusted to accommodates different types of aircrafts. World war I and II led to this
development. During the war period, countries produced more aircrafts and airports for
military purposes. The mass production of aircrafts during world war resulted in the increase
of the air traffic. From this moment, air traffic service and communication were added to the
airport operation. In addition, navigational aid, runway marking, signs and other equipment
were added to the standard airport facilities.

Post-World War
After the world war II ended, there were many trained pilots, engineers, aircrafts and airports.
Countries like USA, England, France started to use the aircrafts for commercial purposes. To
accommodate the passengers, the airport facilities were expanded. Facilities such as terminal,
concession, parking lot, cargo and mail service, hotels, and better road access were added.
This expansion and development continue until today.
The face of airports we know today is completely different from that of 100 years ago.
Started from a greasy open field to test aircrafts, into a giant business model. It is not
exaggerating to say that airport is one of the fastest industries in its development. However,
can airports survive the future challenge?
