Efficient and Inefficient

An efficient machine wastes very little energy.

wasted energy out = 20 J

total energy in = 100 J useful energy out = 80 J

This can be shown on a Sankey Diagram. The thickness (not the length!) of the arrows
shows how much energy is transferred usefully or wasted.

An inefficient machine wastes a lot of energy.

wasted energy out = 70 J

total energy in = 100 J

useful energy out = 30 J

Please note that it is how thick the arrows are that is important and not the length.

The European Union has a label which tells consumers how efficient an appliance is. In an
ideal world, all people should use appliances with an “A” rating.

REMEMBER: The aim of your Powerpoint is to persuade people to buy and use energy
efficient products. You should use arguments based on (1) saving money and (2) saving the
environment. Each of the boxes above should make at least one slide (maybe more than
one!)
