2. PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
The Cobra3-Basic-Unit is an interface for measuring,
controlling and regulating in physics, chemistry, biology ang
technology. It can be operated elthor with a computer (sori
USB interface) or - without any computer at all - with a special
‘operating unit (COM-Unit).
The instrument is provided with 3 analog inputs (1 module
port, 2 sensor ports), 1 anafog output, 3 digital contral leads,
2 timerfcounter inputs and 1 fixed voltage output. The
number of inputs and outputs can be increased as required
by docking further Basic-Units. Non-electrical quantities can
also be determined, by using measuring modules anc
sensors. The operating system of the Basic-Unit can be up-
dated vie the USB interface.
The instrument is contained in a shock~esistant plastic
housing, and is equipped with positioning feet, diverse
mounting possibilities and connecting elements on the side
for docking further Units,

3.4 Functional and operating elements
Al functional and operating elements, with the sole exception
of the threaded connection for a clamp (15), are on the front
plate or on the side walls ofthe instrument
1 Module part

side. The foot can be swung-out to enable the Unit to be
held at an inclined position. The gray colour of the foot
indicates the immovabilty of the holding bar.
3.2 Starting operation
" ith @ computer:
Connect the USB connector of the Basic-Unit (9) to a USB
Socket of the computor by means of the data cable 14608.00.
Apply a 12V 1 > 6W direct voltage from a power supply
(Cobra3 power supply 12151.99) to Input (12). The green
LED (73) indicates that the instrument is ewiiched on.
Install the software (enclosed Measure-Demo-CD with
codes) on the hard disc of the computer and start the
program. To carry on from here, refer to the operating
instructions supplied with the program, or to the experimental
erature,
ting mode, @ COMUnit 12152.00 must be
plugged onto the side wall of the Basic-Unit. Stablize the
plug connection by first swinging the righthand holding bar
ut to the back, then plugging on the COM-Unit and
subsequently swinging the holding bar back towards the front
so that it acts as a lock to the 48 pin plug connection {see
also Fig, 2),
In this mode, connect the external 12 V/> 8 W direct voltage
from a power supply to the COM-Unit, from which the Basic-
Unit is then supplied
Operation and evaluation are carried out completely via the
COMUnit. The demonstrative presentation of the values
measured can be made by moans of a large-scale display
07187.93 or the Display Unit 12154.00, a yT recorder, an
analog measuring instrument or a computer (please refer to
the operating instructions for the COM-Unit),
‘We recommend that you only plug on or remove measuring
modules with the interface switched off. Otherwise the
system can collapse, making a re-starl of the user
programme andfor switching on or off of the interface
necessary.
The measuring modules and corresponding measuring
probes which are available are listed in section 6.3.
3.3 Notes on operation
When the fixed voltage output or the voltage supply of the
sensor port or module port are overloaded, the system can
break down.
In this case, switch the unit off completely, eliminate the
cause of the overloading and bring the unit back into
operation by carrying out the procedure described above.
This causes the unit to return its basic condition, from which
itthen again operates as usual
This instrument is only to be put into operation under
specialist supervision in a controlled electromagnetic
environment in research, educational and training facies
PHYWEAbb. 2:Vorgang der Befestigung von COM-Unit und
BASIC-Unit
This means that in such an environment, no mobile phones:
lc. are to be used in the immediate vicinity. The individual
connecting loads ere each not to be longer than 2:m.
‘The instrument can be 80 influenced by electrostatic charges
‘and other eleciromagnerit phenomena that it no longer
functions within the given technical specifications. The
folowing measures reduce or do away with disturbances:
Avoid fied carpets; ensure potential equalization; camry out
‘experiments on a conductive, earthed surface, use screened,
cables, do not operate high-frequency emitters (radios,
mobile phones) in the immediate vicinity. After @ total
blackout, carry out a "Reset" (new stsit) of the complete
system.

program. To cary on from here, refer to the operating
instructions supplied with the program, or to the experimental
literature.
When used without a computer:
In this operating mode, a CON-Unit 1215200 must be
plugged onto tho side wall of the Basic-Unit. Stabifze the
‘plug connection by first swinging the righthand holding bar
‘out to the back, then plugging on the COM-Unit and
‘subsequently swinging the holding bar back towards the front
