This lesson will require Journals for each student
Lesson Components:
Phase I: I will start by putting a photo of Dr. King on the whiteboard to allow the
students to examine the photo.
Phase II: I will open discussion for questions and ideas about who he is and what
they know about him? I will have a volunteer to write the questions given on the
whiteboard around his photo. Once we have gotten ideas, we gather information
about him by reading aloud the book Who was Martin Luther King Jr? While reading
the book I will discuss events portrayed in the book. I want
them to try to analyze what will happen next in the book.
Phase III: In their journals I want them to write and draw out
ideas with very detailed descriptions. I want them to write
what they feel they have in common with his life growing up.
Phase IIII: Each student will reflect on what they are learning
and their connection to his life

Rubric:
Them participating in their journal with ideas and pictures
Did you use your active listening skills to listen to your peer’s ideas?
Did you participate in sharing your ideas with the class?
