Lesson Title: Dr Martin Luther King

Targeted Grade Level: 5th grade

Academic Subject: History

Lesson Goals:

Students will be able to discover information to support the questions they asked.
Students should be able to express their ideas and thoughts and build on them.

Lesson Objectives:

 The student will learn to ask questions


 The student will learn to participate in research
 The student will learn to write down their discoveries
 The student will learn to express their ideas with the class

Materials/Resources Needed:

 This lesson will require white board w/ marker


 This lesson will require a photo of Dr Martin Luther King
 This lesson will require the book: Who was Martin Luther King? By Bonnie
Bader
 This lesson will require the book: Martin Luther King Jr a Peaceful Leader

 This lesson will require Journals for each student
Lesson Components:

Phase I: I will start by putting a photo of Dr. King on the whiteboard to allow the
students to examine the photo.

Phase II: I will open discussion for questions and ideas about who he is and what
they know about him? I will have a volunteer to write the questions given on the
whiteboard around his photo. Once we have gotten ideas, we gather information
about him by reading aloud the book Who was Martin Luther King Jr? While reading
the book I will discuss events portrayed in the book. I want
them to try to analyze what will happen next in the book.

Phase III: In their journals I want them to write and draw out
ideas with very detailed descriptions. I want them to write
what they feel they have in common with his life growing up.

Phase IIII: Each student will reflect on what they are learning
and their connection to his life

Evaluation:

Rubric:
 Them participating in their journal with ideas and pictures
 Did you use your active listening skills to listen to your peer’s ideas?
 Did you participate in sharing your ideas with the class?
Students will be evaluated based on their:
 Ability to reflect on what they’ve learned
