1. Which of the problems above are most likely to help students develop an understanding
of base-ten number concepts? Why? A: Ramona has 9 bags of cookies with 10 cookies in
each bag. How many cookies does Ramona have?” This problem is most likely to help
students develop an understanding of base-ten number concepts because this problem
is the most developmentally appropriate for someone who is trying to understand base-
ten problems. This problem is the most simple and only requires the students to create
9 groups of 10 to figure out how many cookies she has all together.

I have 74 crayons and 10 crayons fit in each box. How many boxes can I fill with my
crayons?

Identify each strategy as Unitary (Counting by Ones), Base Ten (Counting by Tens), or
Direct Place Value (63= 6 tens and 3 ones). For each strategy, write questions that would
help the student explain the strategy. These questions can be either to help you
understand the student’s strategy, help her reflect on her strategy, or help her explain
her strategy to other students.

5. Do an internet search for STEM lessons. Find a lesson that you think
represents the intent of STEM integration discussed in today’s lecture. Justify
your choice with key elements from the lesson. Include the address of the
lesson you found or upload the lesson on Moodle.

I found a STEM lesson that is an integration of a stem and literacy lesson. In

this lesson, students investigate standard units of measure and sort objects
according to their physical properties before applying them to design a toy box
organizer using the engineering design process. The students will read books on
these concepts to also work on story sequencing, story structure, compare and
contrast, identifying details, sequencing, and summarizing narrative texts.
