CHAPTER 1 : ENGINEERING DIMENSIONS AND UNITS
1. Convert the following from S.I unit to British unit:
Specific heat for carrot : 4520 J/kg-K to BTU/lb-oF.
(2 marks)
2. Convert the following from British unit to S.I. unit:
Pressure of superheated steam : 20 lbf/in2 to kgf/m2.
(2 marks)
Use the following conversion factors:
1 kg = 2.2046 lb 1 kgf = 9.81 N 1 kJ = 0.9476 BTU 1 bar = 105 N/m2
1 kgf = 2.2046 lbf 1 ft = 12 in 1 ft = 0.3048 m 1 W = 1 J/s
1 h = 3600 s 1 gal = 4.54 L T(oF) = 1.8(oC) + 32 T(K) = TOC + 273.15
1 mile = 5280 ft
3. Calculate the density of olive oil if the specific gravity of olive oil is 0.905 and density
of water at 20oC is 1000 kg/m3.
( 1 mark)
