Representing Chemical Potential Energy in Change

For each of the reactions below, write the balanced chemical equation,
including the energy term on the correct side of the equation. Then
represent the energy storage and transfer using the bar graphs. Below the
bar graph diagram for 1 and 2, sketch a standard chemical potential energy
curve for the reaction.

1. When you heated sodium hydrogen carbonate, you decomposed it into

sodium carbonate, water vapor, and gaseous carbon dioxide.

vapor.

2 C3H7OH + 9 O2  6 CO2 + 8 H2O + energy

4. In chemical cold packs, solid ammonium chloride dissolves in water forming

aqueous ammonium and chloride ions. As a result of this solvation reaction,
the pack feels cold on your injured ankle.
energy + NH4Cl(s)  NH4+(aq) + Cl–(aq)

Some may wonder why dissolving is considered a chemical reaction. It is not a

aC s

phase change as the NH4Cl is not breaking into ions as a result of melting. Instead,
vi y re

a reaction occurs in which some water molecules are bound to the NH 4+ and Cl–
ions; as such their structure differs from those water molecules that have only given
up some of their thermal energy. Because the system is cooler than the
surrounding, energy flows into the system.
