Mencius stated that man by nature is good, with original heart, reasonable and righteous heart.

However, this goodness needs to nurture. As for what they are inherently, they can become good. This
is what Mencius means by calling their natures good. Furthermore, human nature is good because
becoming a good person is the result of developing our innate tendencies toward benevolence and
righteous. Thus, human have a tendency to become good if raised in an environment that is healthy for
them. Mencius also devotes some energy to arguing that “rightness” is internal, rather than external to
human beings. He also cited an example of the undutiful son. According to Mencius the son is not born
evil, but because there are some factors that influences his behavior. Lastly, according to Mencius it is
the heart that binds all men and makes them good. He also added that heart is the highest of all for it
attracted to reason and rightness.
