Introduction
I am writing a proposal of what I’ll be writing in my next essay at the University of Cumbria
in Carlisle, England. It’s another essay of graphic novels of two characters the superhero and
the villain. The characters are from DC Comics. The characters I have chosen from graphic
novels are “The Batman” and “The Joker”.
“The Batman” is a dark guardian angel and probably the greatest detective in the world, after
the death of his parent when he a child “The Batman” is sworn to project and fight crime in
Gotham City against villains and criminals, such as the most villainous and dangerous of
them all “The Joker”.
For the other character “The Joker”, “The Batman’s” archenemy is the most dangerous and
most evil villain than any other villains that “Batman” has faced, and causes fear, chaos and
laughter through whole of Gotham City ever since he fell into a tank of toxin wastes, that
turned him insane when he was first fighting “The Batman”, as Red- Hood one.
DC Comics first founded in 1934, “The Batman”, first appeared in 1939 as one of first and
most famous character, “The Joker”, first appeared later in 1940 and have been battling each
other in a lot of comics ever since, through the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age
to the Modern Age.
Planning and Research
In my essay I’ll be doing a lot of research about “The Batman”, and “The Joker” writing
down notes about what it is was like in 1939/40 to most recent events this year. I’ll be
looking at one or two double-page of “The Batman” and “The Joker”, battling each other or
appearing separately of what has been created in the past and what’s has been improved in
recent years.

Asking Questions
In this essay I’ll be asking some questions about “The Batman” and “The Joker”, and then I’ll
be answering them as best I can about them. Questions like:

The Batman
 What is a superhero?
 Can you find a definition and back it up with research and quotes?
 What skills does “The Batman”, have that elevates him higher than an ordinary
policeman?
 Is his superheroes popular?

The Joker
 What is a villain?
 Can you find a definition and back it up with research or quotes?
 What are the attributes of a villain?
 What are the characteristics?
 How are they represented?

These are the questions I’ll be asking and answering them as much research and quotes as
possible, I may have to use some references from one or two movies/tv shows to help answer
some of these questions. This is what I will be doing for this year, at the University of
Cumbria in Carlisle, England writing an essay of graphic novels of two characters from DC
Comics and they are about the superhero and the villain. The characters I have chosen in this
essay are “The Batman” and “The Joker” two comic characters (two archenemies to each
other), always battling each other in Gotham City. This will be good to do this year.
