Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa students are achieving impressive results with the Carnegie Math Pathways.

“What really helped me do well in the class was working in groups. Being able to talk with my class mates about the problems
made it really cohesive, that was cool, that was probably my favorite part. Being able to help my classmates learn, helped me
learn."
- Raistlin Awonohopay, Statway Spring 2018

Faculty and administrators recognize the potential of this program to dramatically increase student retention, improve
outcomes, build students’ confidence as math learners, and develop faculty capacity.

The Carnegie Math Pathways offers faculty in-depth support through regional workshops, personal faculty mentoring,
and online resources to transform their classrooms into a vibrant, collaborative learning environment with an
intentional focus on students’ mindset and belonging. Importantly, the CMP program design aligns with and helps
facilitate the achievement of institutional and community goals of offering a culturally relevant education model
grounded in indigenous values.

Institutional teams at 19 TCUs are now working together as part of a national TCU network of educators to create new
opportunities that make mathematics learning empowering for their students and their communities.

At KBOCC, Quantway and Statway offer students a rich, contextualized learning experience that is enabling more
students to succeed.

• Quantway Core has replaced the Quantitative Literacy course (MA102). During AY 2015-2016, this course had
withdrawal rates ranging from 20-50% and an average success rate of 60%. In 2018, during KBOCC’s first
implementation of Quantway Core, every single student remained enrolled and finished the course with a C or
better. In fact, 71% of students earned an A. Further, KBOCC’s enrollment in quantitatively literacy in Spring 2019 is
higher than in any previous term.
• Statway College is now being used for the Probability and Statistics course (MA201). In Spring and Fall 2018, KBOCC
achieved a 100% success rate in Statway, with more students demonstrating deeper learning and earning higher
course grades (mostly A’s and B’s) than in the previous college statistics course.

Students are reporting a newfound confidence in themselves as learners, while learning mathematics that is meaningful
for their community, personal lives, and careers.

Thank you, Professors Colbert and Marcotte, Deans Aho and Virtanen, and President Sherman for all that you do for
students.
