MAT 632, Kleiner, Homework 6, Solutions

Do the following exercises from Chapter 14:

4.6. Let φ : Zk → Zk be a homomorphism given by multiplication by an integer
matrix A. Show that the image of φ is of finite index if and only if A is nonsingular
and that if so, then the index is equal to | det A |.
Solution.
7.3, part (a) only. Find an isomorphic direct product of cyclic groups, when V is
the abelian group generated by x, y, z, with the relations 3x+2y+8z = 0, 2x+4z = 0.
In other words, V is the quotient of the free Z-module with a basis {x, y, z}
modulo the submodule generated by 3x + 2y + 8z and 2x + 4z. See Section 14.5,
Generators and Relations, pp. 423-425, of the textbook.
Solution.
8.2. Let M be a C[t]-module of the form C[t]/(t − α)n . Show that there is a
C-basis for M, such that the matrix of the corresponding linear operator is a Jordan
block.
For the definition of a Jordan block, see formula (4.7.5), p. 121, of the textbook.
Solution.

8.3. Let R = F [x] be the polynomial ring in one variable over a field F, and let V
be the R-module generated by an element v that satisfies the relation (x3 +3x+2)v =
0. Choose a basis for V as F -vector space, and determine the matrix of the operator
of multiplication by x with respect to this basis.
Solution.
8.4. Let V be an F [t]-module, and let B = (v1 , . . . , vn ) be a basis for V as F -
vector space. Let B be the matrix of the operator of multiplication by t with respect
to this basis. Prove that A = tI − B is a presentation matrix for the module.
For the definition of a presentation matrix, see Section 14.5, Generators and
Relations, pp. 423-425, of the textbook.
