Stability Check for Emergency Lowering Device's Lug Plate

1. Design Condition

Material is A36
Tensile Strength, σ t = 70000psi x 0.07031 = 4921 Kg/cm2
Lug Plate Area = 2.0 x 3.0 = 6 cm2
Safety Factor, FS = 3
Welding Size is 8 mm = 0.8 cm
Estimated Load, P = 4200 Kg

2. Safe Work Load Calculation for the Lug Plate

i. As per max Shear Stress

From Equation,

σ = P x FS
A
P=σxAx1
FS
= 4921 x (1.5 x 1.0) x 1
3
= 2460 Kg

P = 2.46 Ton x 2= 4920 Kg

Calculated Load, P = 4.920 Ton > Actual Load, P = 4200 Kg. Therefore, OK

ii. Weld Strength Check

From Equation,

σ = P x FS
A
P=σxAx1
FS
= 4921 x [(6 x 1) x 0.8] x 1
3
= 7873 Kg

P = 7.8 Ton x 2= 15.6Kg

Calculated Load, P = 15.6 Ton > Actual Load, P = 4200 Kg. Therefore, OK

3. Result

The Lug Plate of Emergency lowering device can be used to withstand a working load of 4200 Kg
