Abstract
An abstract is a single brief paragraph that provides an objective overview of the paper (similar to the
brief summation that you read on the back of a book). An abstract is NOT indented and is to be 150 to
250 words.
Body
In the body of the essay, all the preparation up to this point comes to life. The topic you have
chosen must now be explained, described, or argued. Whenever you reference ANYTHING from another
source make certain to cite that source within the context of your paper. If someone else’s writing has
influenced your work, you MUST give credit to that source. This is true if you are paraphrasing (putting
the information in your own words) or directly quoting another source. The correct in-text citation format
is last name(s) of author, publication year, and then page number (page number is REQUIRED for direct
quotes and can also be included for any reference notation that is not a direct quote). So, an example of
in-text citations is she stated, “Students often had difficulty using APA style” (Jones, 1998, p.199).
Conclusion
The function of the essay's Conclusion is to restate the main argument. It reminds the reader of
the strengths of the argument: that is, it reiterates the most important evidence supporting the
argument. Make sure, however, that your conclusion is not simply a repetitive summary as this
reduces the impact of the argument you have developed in your essay.
