New Gen Wind Symphony was formed in November 2014, when music
budded in the young hearts of twelve passionate youths, led by its Founder
and current President, Mr Ethan Peck.

otivated by our Founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus, Miss

M
Dorean Tan’s unbridled passion and enthusiasm, music pulsated in their lives.
Their love and passion for music spread to many of their friends from other
educational institutions.

It first started as a regular gathering where the like-minded played together.

This group slowly developed into a Community Band where they pursue their

NEW GEN
musical passion.

In January 2017, New Gen Wind Symphony officially went under the wing
of Taman Jurong Community Arts and Culture Club, as an official Interest
Group (IG).

WIND Under the guidance of our Music Director, Mr Vincent Lee, the band aims to
inspire and nurture young musicians and dedicated music lovers alike, by
bringing music to the community.

SYMPHONY
Our motto “Forging Friendships Through Music”.
Since the school started in 2000, the Woodgrove Symphonic Band has
grown from a 40-members unit to one that is 80-members strong.

The Band’s motto of One Band, One Heart, One Sound, captures the goals
of (i) developing a lifelong life-long passion for and appreciation of music and
(ii) working together as one to provide music to encourage or inspire others.
The Band held their very own public concert, Vivace, at the Singapore
Conference Hall in 2014.

To deepen and widen their musical and cultural experiences, the Band
went on an overseas Music Exchange program, collaborating with two local
schools, as well as also performing at Hong Kong Disneyland in Hong Kong

WOODGROVE
in 2015.

PROGRAM NOTES

Carmen Suite is the best known work by the French

composer Georges Bizet (1838-1875). Criticized by
the French public at the time of its creation because
its plot was deemed somewhat indecent, the opera

Carmen Suite
Geroges Bizet transc. Tohru Takahashi
nevertheless came to be considered as a major work
due to its captivating melodies, Spanish character
and energetic rhythms. In this brilliant transcription
for concert band, Tohru Takahasi has remained
faithful to the sparkling joyful atmosphere of the
scenes from the opera.

Composed by Bert Appermont, Jericho is the

musical translation of the well-known story from
the book of Joshua, about the capture of the city of

Jericho

Jericho by the Israelites. The work has the following
subsections: “Years of Exile”, “The Battle of Jericho”,
“Victory” and “Celebration”, and includes some
special musical effects to describe the falling down
of the walls of Jericho, among others.

Composed by Hiroki Takahashi, this piece sets

out to depict five different fantasies of a childhood.
Focusing on childhood fantasies in the early ages,
be it playing with toy trains, dolls or building puzzle

blocks, Toy Box Fantasy weaves together a few
Japanese children’s songs to bring into life the toys
children have been gifted with. The piece depicts
the journey of the toys – dancing, playing, fixing.
After passing various roads and tunnels on it’s
journey, the music comes to an exciting conclusion
with many different melodies being woven together.

Composed by Itaru Sakai, Omisoka depicts the

celebration of a new year where families and friends

Omisoka Itaru Sakai

will gather together to count their blessings and
to usher in prosperity and happiness for the new
year ahead. The composer makes use of his life
experiences to compose a witty and resplendent
concert piece that reflects the meaning of the piece’s
title.
