Unit 2 Summative
FRAME : A Visual and Oral Presentation Project

You will be assessed on Criterion D: Organizing

Due: ______________________

As we continue to read and discuss Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, it is

important to reflect on Esperanza’s experiences and cultural background; both of
which shape her as a human being. Much like Esperanza, all the things that make
up who we are and how we view situations can be referred to as our FRAME. Our
FRAME is made up of values we hold, our culture and background, and our life
experiences. Life experiences include things that we choose to do, as well as things
we do not have any choice about or control over.

This unit summative will allow you to explore who you are and will result in both
a visual and oral presentation. Your visual interpretation of the following
information should be presented in an appealing and artistic way, which may
include (but is certainly not limited to) a poster, keynote, or PowerPoint
presentation. The goal is to answer ALL of the following explorations thoroughly
and present your information with considerable thought and imagination in order to
engage an audience and teach them about yourself.

Unit 2 Summative
Things that make up our frame

We all come from varying backgrounds with different families, experiences, and
values. All of these things that make up who we are can be considered our
FRAME.

Items that MUST BE EXPLORED in order to complete this project properly:

F — Figure out the facts. Not just what is apparent to you, but all the facts. How has
your life experiences thus far shaped you? We all have important experiences in our lives
that shape us. What are some of yours?

R — Reflect on reality. You probably have your own set of values, but where do you
think what you value originated from? Is it your reality and your beliefs or is it based on
something else? Ask yourself: “Am I looking at this through my FRAME or trying to see
it through someone else’s FRAME?” Regardless, what do you value and why?

A — Acknowledge and challenge assumptions. Think about your expectations for

yourself and others and take some time to think about whether they are appropriate or
not. Are you making assumptions based on your FRAME?

M — Maintain an open mind. Just because a FRAME differs from yours doesn’t make
them wrong. What can you learn from other people? What can they learn from you? Have
you ever had an experience where you learned something from someone that seemed
very different from yourself?

E — Expand your experiences. Explore and encounter differences; expand your

comfort zone; increase your cultural competence. What are some ways in which you can
broaden your personal horizons to help you become a more open-minded and principled
human being?

Open-Minded: We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the
values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are
willing to grow from the experience.

Principled: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and
with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our
actions and their consequences.
