6. If the infinite curve y = e−x , x ≥ 0, is rotated about the x−axis, find the area of the resulting
surface.

7. A group of engineers is building a parabolic satellite dish whose shape will be formed by
rotating the curve y = ax2 about the y−axis. If the dish is to have a 10−ft diameter and a
maximum depth of 2 ft, find the value a and the surface area of the dish.

8. Sketch the graph of x = ln y for 1 ≤ y ≤ e. Set up (but don’t evaluate) the integral for the
area of the surface obtained when this curve is rotated about the x−axis. What is the integral
if the curve is rotated about the y−axis instead?

9. Sketch the graph of y = x1 for x ≥ 1. Show that the area of the surface obtained by rotating
this curve about the x − axis is infinite.

10. True or false? If f (x) ≥ g(x) for all x in [a, b], then the length of the curve of f between a and
b is greater than or equal to the length of the graph of g between a and b.
