Weather

Weather is a very important part of our

everyday lives. We watch and listen to the
weather forecast everyday or we go out and
look at an outdoor thermometer. We do these
things to know what to wear or what activities
to plan in case the weather changes. But
weather is not only temperature.

Weather has four elements:

The Sun’s radiation

Heat energy causes things to feel warm. The
sun gives off heat energy. Heat energy from
the sun makes the surface of the earth warm.
Then the surface gives off heat and makes the
air warm.

Temperature
You know that different places in a room have
different temperatures. The same is true
outdoors. On a cold day you have to wear
more clothes than on a hot day. On a hot day
you feel cooler standing under a shady tree
than standing in a sunny place.

Wind
You cannot see air, but you can feel air
moving. Air that moves sideways is called
wind. Winds blow at different speeds. A wind
can be a gentle breeze. A wind can also be a
hurricane. Sometimes it is helpful to know the
speed of the wind.

Precipitation
Clouds are made up of many water droplets.
Sometimes these water droplets bump into
each other and join together. Then they get so
heavy that the air cannot hold them. Soon
they fall to the ground. Droplets of water that
fall to the ground are called precipitation.
