Week 8 – Task

I am going to choose ‘Sorry Day’ as my key event from Australian history that I would like to share
with the children. It is very important for all the children to know about Australian Aboriginal history
and the actual owners of the land they are living on. As in my future teaching practices I would keep
this in my mind this topic is very sensitive and should be discuss with appropriate terminology with
the students. Through sharing this event children will develop deep understanding and appreciation
for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. I would like to focus on the first key
concept highlighted by ACARA cross curriculum activities, ‘which states that underlining the special
connection to country by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrates their unique
belief systems will help children in developing related knowledge’[ CITATION Cro16 \l 16393 ]. The
children should know basic things about the Apology speech given on 13.02.2008 by Prime Minister
‘Kevin Rudd’ on behalf of the Government. It was the first initiative taken by Australian Government
in order to give recognition to the Aboriginal and Torres Islander People. It wasn’t just an apology; it
was the effort which contributed largely in acknowledging Aboriginal people and their importance.
Though, it also connects children with the culture and history of the Aboriginal people who have
been suffering and are still suffering from the treatments given to them by Non-Indigenous people.
As they are young children who are going to be the future of the Australia should be aware of the
land history and the children who belong to Aboriginal community should have the sense of
belongingness within the schools and in their homeland.
