Education is a Necessity

Joshua Timothy

There is a trending belief that being educated would serve them no good. Some people feel that

as long as they know their alphabet and basic math they will be able to get by just fine in life.

This is bad idea. It is such a laughably bad idea there ought to be a movie. Education is

absolutely necessary. There are no ifs, ands or buts. Being educated can bring entertainment to

your life, opens you up to a variety of careers and gives you control of your own future.

There are many different stories in the world. There are stories meant for everyone. Conversely,

there are stories that are not. People often miss out on stories with complex plots and themes

such as the epic poem “The Iliad” or the philosophical movie “Ex Machina” because they do not

understand them. That is not to say simple stories are inherently inferior but it is unfortunate that

so many people close themselves off to so many interesting stories. Middle aged adults often do

this, because they feel that they do not need to learn anything new. The truth is you should never

stop learning new things. Being educated can open you to a whole new world of entertainment.

Young people have a habit of having dream jobs that are easy to get but hard to maintain or vice

versa. From becoming a singer, to a football player or to a politician, it is always good to have a

fallback plan. That way, you can confidently follow your dreams without falling into despair if

and when your dreams do not come true. Athletes are particularly infamous for not doing this

and always come to regret it when they become too injured to play professional sports. Having a

good education can serve as a safety net in case you fail to achieve your dream.
There is a common saying that ‘knowledge is power’. If you lack knowledge, you risk becoming

a tool of other people's machinations. Being uneducated leads to gullibility, which is a trait

unscrupulous businesses and politicians value in people. It is very easy to convince a fool to buy

something he doesn't need or to vote against his own interests. This is very common in the

elderly, because that is the age when people are at their most stubborn. Being educated can

prevent you from being taken advantage of.

Education is a privilege that is often squandered. Some people believe that they do not need it at

all. Others believe that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Others believe they can get by

with someone else thinking for them. All of these are mindsets that can lead to a variety of

problems. Education should not be wasted. Being educated opens you up to a variety of career

opportunities, brings enjoyment to your life and gives you control of your own fate.
