    Lithium Batteries: The Regulations


    The transportation in commerce of lithium batteries
    are subject to the following regulatory agencies:
    • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety
    Administration (PHMSA) within the U.S.
    Department of Transportation (DOT).
    • International Civil Aviation Administration (ICAO).
    • International Air Transport Association (IATA).
    • International Maritime Organization (IMO).

    All are applicable to this requirement

    Per the Hazardous Materials Regulations of PHMSA/USDOT

    OK until December 31, 2018. Prohibited as of January 1, 2019

    More to Consider(1.0)…
    • Until December 31, 2018 either the Class 9-
    Miscellaneous or the Class 9-Lithium Batteries
    label may be used, as applicable.
    • As of January 1, 2019 only the Class 9-Lithium
    Batteries Label may be used, as applicable.
    • Each of the regulatory agencies has harmonized
    their regulations to synchronize with the dates
    indicated in this presentation.

    More to Consider(2.0)…
    • The Class 9-Lithium Batteries Label is only to
    be used for packages containing lithium batteries
    as specified by regulation.
    • Use of the Class 9-Miscellaneous Label for
    other hazardous materials/dangerous goods will
    continue unchanged.
