Title: NUTR 1020 Signature Assignment: Extension of Nutrition Perspectives

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of human nutritional needs and the role of nutrition in

improving individual health and the societal economic impact of food choices.

It is important for us to have a balanced and healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals that
include fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. The role of nutrition in improving health is
link to the amount of these vitamins and mineral, whether too little or in excess. The societal
impact of food choices is represented both in the overall health of a community and the
economic growth/decline of a community.

2. Relate technological advancements in medicine and food production to the

advancement of the science of human nutrition.

Advancements in technology within medicine has helped us to better understand what

nutrients our bodies needed and how they are used within our system. Therefore, we can
incorporate these nutrients in the food production for our daily diets.

3. Explain the impact that the food industry has on human food choices and the
subsequent relationship to health and disease at the individual, societal, and
environmental level.

The food industry is labeled an “industry” for a reason. They impact our food choices
through media and nutrition claims in attempts to sell their products. These claims are not
always so useful to our health and have also been linked to diseases such as; diabetes,
obesity, and hypertension. This not only impacts the individual, but society as a whole.

4. Provide examples of past and present nutrient and diet trends in modern society and
the positive and/or negative implications on human health and the earth’s resources.

Fast food is a nutrient and diet trend that was originally provided for the increase of dual
working household. It was a convenience to feeding the family after a long day’s work.
Currently, there are many studies that have shown that consuming fast food is not healthy
and leads to obesity and health problems. Fast food now provides “healthier” options to
attempt to resolve some of these claims.

5. Provide examples of positive and negative interactions of humankind with

microorganisms regarding sickness, health and food production.

Some of the positive interaction of microorganisms in food production has to do with

creating beneficial products such as yogurt and its probiotic benefit. There is also yeast for
the production of bread. These food help keep our bodies balanced and healthy. Negative
interactions of microorganisms would be things such as mold and fungus found in our food
supply. Consuming these can make us very sick.
6. Address diet and nutrient issues and concerns for weight control, disease prevention,
physical activity, food availability, and biotechnology.

The best approach to weight control and disease prevention is to be aware of what you are
eating and how much of it you are eating. Consuming things like processed foods and fast
food has been proven time and time again to cause weight gain and disease, opt to purchase
fresh vegetables and fruits, and steer clear of the faulty health claims on packaged foods.
Be physically active as often as possible, get out and move frequently. This will help to burn
off any excess calories and also build strong muscles and bones for longevity.
