Student: I sent an email to Ms Nero and I forgot to thank you.

I'm not sure if I told you about this before

but I've been a wreck ever since she died. Thank you so much for having patience with me and
understanding. We need more teachers like you.

Me: Thank you very much. Please take your time getting back into the ritual of classes. When you are
able to we will find a way for you to finish the debate and get you the grade I know you are capable of.
Our thoughts and prayers to your family.

Student: Thank you

Student: Today was the funeral and I'm still feeling sad. I'm not sure if I can make the targeted
enhancement on Wednesday either. My heart is going to forever be broken but I'll still try and graduate.
I can log on for 4th period like last week or I can go on for 8th.

Me: If you would like to tomorrow join 4th period feel free and we can talk about how we can
incorporate you back into the classroom. Like I have said, you are passing our class and I would rather
you work on other classes that you need to get back on track with than worry about ours. Hope to see
you 4th period!

Student: Thank you both

The student would do the debate two days later and did a great job by themselves. The student fought
to try their best and did great under the circumstances. This is one example of an issue that occurred
during my student teaching where a student needed an extended deadline.
