Earlier in the semester we were asked to listen to a TED talk by Michael C.

Bush about what

makes employees happy at work. One of the things that he said that stood out to me was “it is not

about the perks; it is about how they are treated. By their leaders and the people, they work with.

He also stated that the companies that are successful are the ones that you don’t have to spend

more money to make money. I think that this speaks volumes about who a leader really is and

how they want to succeed and if they want their employees to succeed as well. The four ideas

that Michael C. Bush talked about to better your relationship with your employees are trust and

respect, fairness, listening, and talking about change. As a leader you want your employees to

trust and respect you, but the only way that is possible is if you trust and respect them as well.

When we talk about fairness, it doesn’t matter how old you are, what gender you are and what

your status is to a company or organization. Everyone wants to be treated as though they are an

equal part to the company. When we think about listening, Bush stated that we need to unlearn a

few things. We don’t need to make sure we have eye contact; we need to stay humble and search

for the best ideas possible. Let them know that you are considering what they are saying and that

what they are saying matters. Lastly, talk about the change that you want to make. Think about

the way you behave, treat others and support them. Make the change because it is something you

believe in. Find you reason to make a change.
