ITALIAN PAVILION, EXPO MILANO, 2015 ONUR KAAN ONAY - 140501052

The design chosen for the Italy Pavilion is the result of an international design
competition awarded by Expo 2015 SpA in May, 2013; among 68 participants Nemesi won
the competition  with Proger and BMS for the engineering and with Prof. Eng. Livio De
Santoli for the sustainability. The Italy Pavilion consists of the permanent building Palazzo
Italia (6 levels, built area 14,398 sqm) and the temporary buildings along the Cardo (2 levels,
built area: 12,551 sqm). (From the architect, “archdaily”)

At Expo 2015 in Milan, the Italian architectural office Nemesi & Partners presented
the prize-winning, air-purifying Palazzo Italia. Palazzo Italia, built in Milan in 2015, has a
larger working space with 13 thousand square meters of space with this technology. Michele
Molè, the architect of the building, says, "We want to make an osmotic organism, like a tree
that pulls carbon dioxide into it and gives the oxygen out." The outer layer of titanium oxide-
containing biodynamic cement captures the nitrogen oxide pollution and converts it into a
harmless salt. This harmless salt runs off the surface with the rain. This material belongs to
Italcementi company, that increases the cost of construction by only 4 to 5 percent. At the
same time, Palazzo Italia consumes 40 percent less energy than conventional structures and
does not pollute the air at all.
It is stated by Italcementi that "the entire outer surface of the structure and a part of the
inner structure contains active biodynamic cement panels". With this technology, certain
airborne pollutants are caught and converted into salt by direct sunlight activation through the
material. Thus the smoke in the atmosphere is cleaned. 80 percent of the air-cleaning cement
was obtained from recycled materials such as "Carrara marble". Energy-saving building The
photovoltaic glass roof to be installed in Palazzo Italia will also be able to generate energy
throughout the day. Besides buildings, it is also possible to use for the air-cleaning cement on
motorways, pedestrian pavements or other areas where pollution.
