Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the TLE Computer System Servicing Grade 7/8 Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Using and Maintaining Hand Tools!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
1
For the learner:
Welcome to the TLE Computer System Servicing - Grade 7/8) Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Using and Maintaining Hand Tools !
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Using and Maintaining Hand Tools. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
Identify and select appropriate hand tools according to the task requirements;
3. Identify and mark unsafe or faulty tools for repair according to standard
company procedure;
5. Always observe all safety procedures in using tools and use appropriate PPE;
7. Do not drop tools to avoid damage; carry out routine maintenance of tools
according to standard operational procedures, principles, and techniques.

Lesson
Using and Maintaining Hand
1 Tools
Using and maintaining hand tools help you acquire the knowledge, skills and
attitudes you needed in identifying, preparing, using and maintaining tools and
equipment in Computer System Servicing as your basic step in becoming a proficient
computer technician.
What’s In
Do you have hand tools at home? Can you identify them? Some of these tools are
used in repairing and maintaining electrical and electronics at home.
In this module, you will always learn different hand tools and its uses in repairing
and maintain computer devices to avoid damage of tools and safety procedures in
using tools with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment PPE.
9
What’s New
Activity 1:
Andrew loves to help his father, Manong Tony, a technician, in their computer shop.
To assist his father, he needs to identify properly the tools in the shop. Let us help
identify these tools!
10
Proper Tools and Selection
11
8. Soldering Flux allows you to supply a clean
soldered.
12
Proper use of hand tools
A computer technician is requiring using appropriate tools within the toolkit when
repairing computers. Here is the correct use of tools in working areas.
Several tools are attracted. When working around electronic devices, take care that
the tools you’re using haven’t been attracted. Attractive fields may be harmful to data
stored on attractive media. Check your tool by pointing the tool with a screw. If the
screw is drawn to the tool, don’t use the tool.
1. Screws. Screws can become exposed if you over-tighten them with a screwdriver.
An exposed screw may mire within the screw hole, or it should not tighten firmly.
Discard exposed screws.
a. Flat head screwdriver. Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of a Phillips
head screw. Never use a screwdriver as a wrecking bar. If you can’t remove a
component, check to determine if there’s a clip or latch that’s securing the
component in position.
2. Soldering iron and stand. Always use a soldering iron stand after you aren’t
soldering to avoid burns or damage.
3. Crimping tool and wire stripper. When using the crimping tool and wire
stripper, you are doing not to have to squeeze super hard the handle because the
aim of it’s just to form a bend within the center of the crimp bead and to insulate
the wire.
4. Long Nose Pliers and Tweezer. After using the long nose pliers and tweezer
clean it properly with cleaning oil and rugs to avoid them from becoming dull and
rust.
5. Multi-tester and Lan tester. Always maintain the functionality and accuracy of
multi tester and lan tester to ensure the accurateness of measurement of any
things that you just shall measure.
6. Anti-static wrist strap. Always properly check the device before using it to make
sure that you just are free from danger and to avoid serious damage to the person
engaged in it.
13
Proper Maintenance of hand tools
To prevent tools from damage, we must properly maintain our tools to stay them safe
and usable condition. Here are the subsequent requirements for tools and
equipment maintenance:
To ensure that tools and equipment remain in condition and last for a protracted
time, store them properly so it’ll be easy to search out when needed and are less
likely to be lost.

What’s More
Activity 3
Andrews needs to understand fully the importance of tools and maintenance.
Let us read and analyze the statements below and provide the appropriate
answer.
TRUE OR FALSE: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the
statement is wrong on the space provided.
___________4. Properly stored tools and equipment are going to be easy to seek
out when needed and are less likely to be lost.
___________5. The safe use of a tool depends on using the tool for the aim that
it absolutely was designed and for other purposes where it will be
used as substitute tool isn’t available.
15
What I Have Learned
Let us now reflect on what we have learned from this module. Speak freely what is
in your mind about the topic by trying to answer the following statements below:
1. These lesson made me understand that: Computer tools and equipment are
_____________________________________ .
2. I need to open the computer case. To easily remove the screw, I should use
________________ to loosen cross head screws.
4. I need to test the network cable wiring, I should use _________________ for
Ethernet connection.
5. To ensure that the tools are in good condition, proper use of tools and
equipment can ___________________________________ and proper maintained
tools and equipment can __________________________________.
16
What I Can Do
Manong Tony instructed Andrew to disassemble the system unit, he needs to
learn the basics in computer system servicing, such as knowing how to
identify the different hand tools and its uses in repairing equipment. Let’s help
Andrew to answer and complete the paragraph below.
A (1)
______________________ is a hand-held device that aids in accomplishing
task. (2)___________________ the best tool for each task requires (3)
