THE DOUBLE-EDGED KNIFE OF THE NETIZENS’
OUTRAGE AND SYMPATHY
On the twentieth of December 20, 2019, Filipino netizens mulled
over a video of what has now been tagged as the "Tarlac Shooting".
It showed a video of Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca,
along with his daughter, having a heated argument with Sonya
Gregorio, the mother, and her son, Frank, which eventually led to
the latter's demise by Nuezca's gun-equipped hand.
Enraged, the netizens used the incident as a call to bring back old
issues of police injustices and abuse of power. The netizens' anger,
however, was not isolated to Jonel Nuezca. Even the "smart-
mouther" daughter of his has gotten the bloody spotlight; using her
now infamous line "My father is a policeman." as a source of satirical
entertainment.
Showering the social media with shouts of protest against injustices
done by those with authority, they had used their voices the way it
was meant to be used. But, including Nuezca's daughter in the
aftermath of their anger is stretching the protest a little too thin.
After all, though the child showed a bad attitude, she is still too
young to receive the blows of the netizens' mad-infused trauma
pack.
At that point, social media once again proved how double-edged it
can be. A balanced weapon that is often used unequally. It was also
at that point, when Filipinos exhibited how cruel they can be. How
the source of their laughter can be bloody.

I mean, how many hours? No idea? Did the time, without you
knowing, fly by like a jet plane? Whoosh!
Hmmm…ever tried not doing that? No? well, why the heck
not? You tryn’a fight off boredom, spouting an excuse like, “I
have absolutely nothing to do!”
While the truth is, you have too much work piled up, it just
doesn’t interest you or make you laugh or let you learn life
hacks that aren’t exactly helpful.

throughout Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube
after Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel
Nuezca was caught in a video shooting the
two victims in point-blank range on
December 21, 2020.
Occurring on the day before the video went
viral, the “Tarlac shooting” incident was
allegedly the result of long term conflict
between the Gregorios and Nuezcas’ “right
of way”. According to the suspect, his
actions were triggered when Sonya and his
daughter engaged in a heated banter.
Following the incident, Nuezca stated that
he regrets killing Sonya and Frank Gregorio.
And appealed to Brigadier General Val De
Leon that help be given to his family upon
his detain.
UNICEF, in response to the netizens’ act of
“vilifying” Nuezca’s daughter released an
official statement on the 22nd of December.
“We appeal to the public to refrain from
using violent language and posting her
photos and personal information. This only
causes additional harm, trauma, and stigma
to the child.”
Nuezca is now being held in the Bureau of
Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in
Paniqui, Tarlac, awaiting his trial.

THE ROTTEN SIDE OF HUMANITY
I have been left out…it seems. Cars swooshing past my perception; blurry eyes casting their direction
to me; and yet, disconnection crawls past my system.
How did I result to this? What have become of me? Think. Think. Look back. Look back past the
swirling hurricane of my hazy memories. Think. Think.
Did I have any family? Did I, somehow, somewhere in my timeline…fell in love? And then what?
Then what?
My breathing came heavily. I drown everyday seems to me; in this ocean of disjointed yet connected
people. Let me breathe. Let me in. See me as I am. See me as I am!
I am standing right here. I have been sitting right here. I have been living right here. I have been
sleeping right here. I have been waiting right here. I have been crying right here. I am hopeless right here.
See me. See me not as what you see now. See me through my eyes who have left any sign of my
existence.

Please help me. The beggar who doesn’t beg for your money. The homeless who is not asking to be let
in your houses. Yes, I am the very reflection of the rotten side of humanity.
