SED 381: Assessment 2 Karyotypes
CAEP alignment: 1.4
Directions: We have discussed the importance of understanding the biological/ physiological aspects of
individual with disabilities, specifically ones with cognitive impairments. There are several steps to this,
assessment:
1, Identify the karyotype that you have been given- explain what syndrome is identify the
karyotype. Justify your answer.
Explain the following reasons why understanding the causation Is important in relation to this
syndrome: (3 areas): prevention, treatment, and.

Karyotype- Williams Syndrome
‘The Karyotype that I have is Williams Syndrome. Williams syndrome is a syndrome
where the people have a “Pixie-like” appearance and are usually short statured. They are very
friendly, anxious, and usually have a highly developed vocabulary. Williams syndrome is caused
by a deletion of the 7th chromosome. I knew that this karyotype showed William’s syndrome } ‘i
Decause there was a small piece of chromosome right next to the 7th chromosome. I knew onl Y
this was a deleted part of the 7th chromosome that had come off and was now next to the 7th
‘whole chromosomes. This was a clear sign that it was Williams syndrome,
Williams syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality disorder, and is known to not have a
cure so far, There is no prevention you can do except for getting genetic counseling to see if your
baby will have it. As far as prevention goes, this is completely up to the parents. If they know
that their baby will have it, itis their choice to have the baby or not, I give no judgement on d-
whether or not the parent chooses that life because it is not my judgement to give. However, if ow vi
they choose to have the baby, they have to talk to the doctor about treatment. Of course, there is,
no known cure for this syndrome, but precautions can be done to let the women and men to live
the best life that they can,
In this syndrome, they have many medical conditions like cardiac issues, digestive
problems, and difficulties eating, By having genetic counseling, you will be able to know that
your child will have this, and be able to prepare with the doctors on what you can do to prolongtheir lives. Making sure that you are extra careful when they are eating is also very important to
make sure that they are chewing carefully and that they are digesting the food that they are da
eating. You should also make sure you have a cardiologist on call due to their heart problems. Ve
‘They are also known to have mild cognitive impairments, although not all cases because their 1Q
varies. With knowing this, you will also know how to go about raising your child and knowing
‘what someone with that particular IQ needs to learn and survive. The knowing is important, but
s the treatment that matters the most.
In the classroom, itis very important to know the characteristics of not only the disorder
but the student, Yes, every child is different and may react to things differently, but there are
‘commonalities in the syndrome that will help teachers better prepare for the school year to come.
In my classroom, if T have a student that has William’s syndrome, I will work with the speech se!
pathologist to ensure that they get the best instruction to better their speech and language skills. I
Il use phonemic and phonological awareness lessons until I think the student is ready to go
onto phonics-based lessons, People who have Williams syndrome also struggle with math. By
knowing this, I will be able to write lesson plans that help my students understand the math
problems that we are working on better. I will have to different instruction to better instruct
the students who are struggling. I will also work with the occupational therapist to work on the
student's fine motor skills because of the visuospatial difficulties that they have. The
‘occupational therapist and I could work on the student’s handwriting skills to help be able to
write more clearly. However, students with this disability also have things that they are very
good at, It is common for the people who have this disability to be very musical. I would use this
as a strategy in teaching language by using songs or musical sounding poems to ensure the best
earning possible. They also have a strength of being able to read with god practice and spelling.oY
Spelling means that they may be able to be a good writer and J could make those skills flourish
by working with the spelling aspect. It is very important for a teacher to know her students’
strengths and weaknesses when it comes to lesson planning in the classroom.
People with this disability also has emotional characteristics. They are very happy and @)
over fiiendly with their personalities. This isa good thing because they will not throw temper
tanygims because of their over friendly and happy personality. However, they are highly anxious.
have firsthand experience with this at HOPE center. One of my members have this syndrome,
and the characteristics fit her. She is very happy go lucky, but as anxious as any of my members.
‘One day we were going on a walk and she started crying and couldn't walk past this certain,
house because there was a fog barking and she is afraid of dogs. You need to just be very calm
voiced and happy and get her mind off of what is happening. We usually use the go to, “Tell that
dog he is a turkey.” That is her favorite thing to say, and she is happy when she gets to say that.
By having firsthand experience, I will be able to handle these situations, and by knowing the
student in the classroom, I can help to handle the anxiousness of them too. Lastly, the people
with this disability have nice sized vocabularies, but it is harder for them to hold a conversation
because of their reciprocal difficulties. [ will work hard on building that conversational skill with
my student and make sure that isa priority in their IEP, Reading, writing, and math is important,
but you need to be able to relay your messages to survive in the world, and having a conversation
is vital to living a normal, high quality life.
By knowing and understanding these disabilities, it helps to know how to run your
classtoom. It is so important to know each and every one of your students and their ticks,
specialties, strengths, weaknesses, and how they learn. This paper has helped me to understand
karyotypes and how they can affect the children and my classroom.A x zz Wz : 0z 6L
