Civil War Battle Diorama Project

Circle the battle you are assigned:

First Battle of Bull Run * Battle of Antietam * Battle of Vicksburg

Battle of Chancellorsville * Battle of Gettysburg

Battle of Shiloh * Battle of the Wilderness * Battle of Atlanta

The battles of the Civil War had been built up within that century with advances in

technology, developments of military strategy, and generations of military leaders who had

already proven themselves on the field. When we study the Civil War, all of this is put on display

in words, but this project will challenge you by having you create a diorama of one of these

battles. You will be creating a 3-D war scene depicting the battle you are assigned.

● First, research your battle to learn about the setting of the battle (on a hill, near the
water, in a town/city), those involved, and what happened.

● Second, fill out the provided planning sheet which will be due the week prior to the due
date.

● Third, begin construction of your diorama detailing the background, soldiers, civilians,
animals, plants, buildings, and weapons (note: not all of these details will be relevant to
your project). You may use pre-made materials (plastic trees, miniature soldiers, or toy
cannons) and/or make your own as far as what fills the box, but the project should be set
up within a cardboard box or a shoebox. Also, make sure that the box has a
background which depicts the environment of the battle.

You have been given a planning sheet which will be collected Wednesday, April 29.

This is supposed to include the information you will write on your notecard plus your design for

the diorama; be sure to detail composition of your plants, people, and weapons.
When the project is turned in, an index card should be attached to the

project, in the following format:

Also, be sure to have your name, date, and class labeled on the back of the project.

Dioramas will be due Friday, May 7. The Project will be rated on content, creativity, design, and

construction, and its grade will be worth up to 25 points as a test grade.

Below are some examples you may use for inspiration.
