TOP 4 EFFECTS OF
CIVIL SOCIETY INVOLVEMENT
By Honey Shen Buladaco

Being a Filipino doesn’t end by just bearing it in your identification cards and birth
certificate. It doesn’t end by simply introducing yourself in front of the world as a Filipino
citizen. Instead, you have to live as a Filipino— as a Filipino who knows and values his/her
responsibilities as a citizen of a country.

I have stated below the top 4 reasons why being involved in community activities is
important not just for ourselves but also for the betterment of our country.

1. PROMOTION: UNITY IN COMMUNITY

There are several organizations and institutions nowadays who aims to unite the
world or a specific place. It has been years since that advocacy began but why
can’t we have it? Don’t we deserve peace and unity?

Peace is so difficult to have— both with ourselves and with our fellowmen.
Through civic and social engagements, a community can achieve a better
environment: an environment whose people will help each other, and will listen to
each other. Not perfect, but better.
Civic activities provide friendships between the volunteers, participants, and
generally, between the citizens. Being friends with your neighbors or co-citizens
will surely affect the state of tranquility in your community. That way, peace will
no longer be impossible for every community. By involving yourself in a
friendship, you will have a reason to fix what is probably wrong. You will have a
better understanding in every individual you are facing each and every day. If
only 50% of the population thinks this way, then we all are probably at peace
right now.

2. Productive Citizens, Away from the Wrong Path

Spending time doing

civic activities will
refrain the citizens from
engaging in illegal deeds.
It will help prevent the
rising cases of illegal
deeds in our country
because the attention of
the people, especially the
youth, will be diverted to
the civic activities.
Instead of being busy
using illegal drugs, they
will be busied in
participating in community activities such as outreach programs. It is also
important to be a productive citizen because the community or country depends
on each of the people residing in the community. Productive citizens mean a
productive country.

3. Nationalism and Patriotism

There’s no other way to love someone unless you know him and his soul. You
can’t love a country because you are told to because frankly, you will be just
fooling yourself. You’ll have to know the truth behind a country. You have to
involve yourself in your country. You can’t just sit there and wait for the SAP
payout, you know. You have to do something too to deserve the privileges as a
citizen.
I believe that participating in community activities will help a person grow his/her
love for his/her society. Seeing the struggles of everyone in the community will
make someone develop care for the community. Knowing the truth and the news
will awaken everyone’s affection to their own hometowns and countries.

4. Good Example for the Youth and Kids

Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal said that the youth is the hope of our
future but, is it really true?

The youth alone can’t be the hope of our future. The youth needs guidance from
ones who’ve experienced life longer which are the adults, or the older citizens.
We cannot always blame the youth for doing things that won’t fit
in Jose Rizal’s quote. It’s just that some kids weren’t taught the way the elderlies
want them to be. You can’t see a Mona Lisa painting when you’re drawing Last
Supper in your canvas. You can’t see a respectful child when you’re showing
him/her disrespectfulness. That’s why civic activities should be participated first
by the elderlies before the youth. The elders should show how to love and care for
the country. Adults are holding a big role in a child’s growth. The youth as the
hope of our nation will always depend on the preceding generation. Setting
yourself as a good example will help every kid who is still being molded and still
growing. Be a good role model to the youth, and your future and the future of
your descendants will brighten.

There are way, way, more reasons why we should participate in civil
activities but I am afraid we would end next year if I state each one of them.
Loving our country comes out naturally. You just have to see the brighter side of
it. Our country right now might be in a turmoil-state but I still believe in the
supremacy of votes. Some might think that voting won’t change a thing because
one person’s vote won’t matter. But what if half of the population thinks that
way? Would you want to be one of them? Would you want to be one of those who
chooses to disregard their privilege to vote? Would you want to waste your only
chance to vote?
As you vote in this coming election, think wisely of who you are voting
because it will heavily affect everyone— your kids, your spouse, your siblings,
your parents, your grandkids, your friends, and your fellow Filipinos. Our future
depends on your vote. Your vote matters. Everyone matters.
