Solidworks vs Ansys

The invention of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software has solved the issue of the cost of
doing tests with prototypes to enhance engineering designs, but also it has enhanced the speed of
the analysis of these designs. All this improvement is because CAE software tests the designs all via
computer and it works creating a virtual representation of the design for the analysis and
simulation, reducing the costs and enhancing the speed of the tests. There is a diversity of
computer programs that offers CAE software; however, many companies agree that the best ones
are Ansys and Solidworks. There are many differences and similarities between them that we have
to know in order to choose the best one for the needs of the design.

First of all, it is crucial to know what kind of design they can simulate and analyze, and how easy
they are to manage. Both Ansys and Solidworks can simulate and analyze classic designs of
engineering. For example, the software Ansys can analyze the strength of a simple beam and
simulate it showing the beam and how the stress is distributed in the similar way Solidworks does.
On the other hand, there are some designs in which one of them can simulate and analyze
significantly better than the other one. For instance, Ansys can simulate and analyze electric
machine designs with great detail and great accuracy while Solidworks software has many
deficiencies in this. In contrast, Solidworks is easier to manage than Ansys software. This is
because Solidworks has more manuals, videos that help us to understand how it works whereas
Ansys is more complex to learn. It is related to what my teacher said, “There are more people that
know how to manage Solidworks than Ansys because the first one is easier to learn.”

Finally, the cost and accuracy of each software are important to know also. My university´s teacher
said that the accuracy of the results depended more on the real design and also he told us that
both Ansys and Solidwork had similar accuracy. In contrast, many companies have demonstrated
that Ansys has more accuracy with an error of 2% compare to an error of 4% of Solidworks. On the
other hand, Solidworks is cheaper than Ansys. However, if you need to simulate a lot of products
for a big production, Ansys gets cheaper because of his accuracy and high speed.

In conclusion, both of them are good CAE software, but the election of the software depends on
the purpose and needs of your design.
