There are different types of reading depending on the text we are reading and what we
are looking for in it. Readings can be informative, reflective, entertaining, or critical, to
name a few examples; and the speed with which we read is determined according to the
type of reading and genre of what we read. There are two techniques that will help you
get a general idea of the text in front of you but in a quick way. These are skimming and
scan, two fast reading methods that you can put into practice.

Skimming reading method

Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the
newspaper, you are probably not reading word for word, instead you are scanning the
text. Skimming is done at a speed of three to four times faster than normal reading.
People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time.
Use skimming whenever you like to see if an object might be of interest to your research.
There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first
and last paragraphs using headings, summaries, and other organizers as they move down
the page or screen. You can read the title, subtitles, subtitle and illustrations. Consider
reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This technique is useful when you are
looking for specific information rather than reading for understanding. Skimming works
well for finding dates, names, and places. It can be used to review charts, tables and
graphs.

Scanning reading method

Exploration is a technique often used when looking up a word in the phone book or dictionary.
Looking for keywords or ideas. In most cases, you know what you are looking for, so you are
focused on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly around the
search page for specific words and phrases. The scan is also used the first time you find a resource
to determine if it answers your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you can go back
and skim it. During the search, look for the author's use of the organizers such as numbers, letters,
measures, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that appear in bold italic face, or in a
different font size, style or color. Sometimes the author.

What is it for?

Scanning involves running your eyes across the page looking for specific facts or key words and
phrases.

In the first place, they are an aid in locating new terms, which are introduced in the chapter

Second, scanning is helpful in locating declarations, definitions, formulas, etc., that you must
remember completely and accurately.

Similarly, exploration skills are valuable for various purposes in studying.

How is it used?

The technique is used when you are looking for a name in the phone book: move your eye quickly
over the page to find certain words or phrases that are relevant to the task you are doing. It is
useful for analyzing fragments of text to see if they will be useful to you: * The introduction or
foreword of a book * The first or last paragraphs of chapters * The last chapter of a book.
