Accuracy Statement
In most cases with digital images, the image is received with calibration information provided
by the modality creating the images and ASPYRA’s PACS will display the image to match that.
We rely on the data received in the DICOM communications according to the DICOM
standard. For example the True size commonly used in CT, MR, and US being derived from
DICOM attribute 0028,0030, giving a measurement in “mm”. In the MedVIEW Training
Guide, Chapter 8, (beginning on page 17) we discuss the importance of calibrating the images
to an object of known size even if the calibration information is provided by the modality in
order to account for differences in technique that may have affected the actual dimensions vs
the reported dimensions and we have no way to determine the technique used during
imaging. If the information received in the DICOM attribute is wrong, our measurements will
be wrong as well, unless calibrated to an object of known size, as we are post processing
images based on the information received from 3rd party DICOM compliant systems.
ASPYRA’s PACS product bases measurement accuracy ranges on a 0.4mm margin of error
introduced by monitor calibration, user ability to place mark, and standard digital image
limitations. For example, Ellipse margin of error range is calculated using a + and – 0.4mm
for the short and long radius in Pi * Lr * Sr = A.

Table of Contents
If the facility preparing the viewing package for you is unsure of your viewing capabilities, patient
exams may be saved in all three formats and MedVIEW Express included.
When included with patient exams, MedVIEW Express resides as a separate line item within
the folder containing the exam(s) sent for your review. The type of image formatting
performed in transferring the images from the home facility to the removable storage
medium now in your possession determines how you will proceed.
Figure 1-1: Export Sample Displaying Viewer Executable and Available Image Formats
Depending upon the file formats designated when the patient exams are exported, you may
have up to three viewing options available from the CD. You may launch the CD Viewer
using the ViewExam.bat command; run a third party DICOM Viewer and open the
DICOMDIR file; or view an HTML formatted exam using your default internet browser by
double-clicking the AccessNET.html file. For examples of each of these files, see Figure 1-1
above.
If you access MedVIEW Express from a workstation on which MedVIEW is installed, the
MedVIEW splash screen will display. Sign in and you can use the full feature MedVIEW
Viewer to review, annotate, sign, and close exam images and reports.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 1-3
Distribution Media
The splash screen appears and displays a download bar indicating the loading
progress of the viewer.
MedVIEW Express is engineered to open and display exams quickly from a CD. Typically
the program will launch and begin showing images within 20 seconds, but the speed of
your equipment must be considered. The opening and display timetable for MedVIEW
Express is based upon a CD reader that functions at 40X speeds. If the CD reader you are
using is slower than 40X, the time required to fully open and the viewer and display exams
will be increased.
3. Once the viewer is completely loaded, the Exam Explorer screen displays, providing a
listing of all included exams. For more information about the Exam Explorer window,
see “MedVIEW Express Exam Explorer Window” on page 2-2 of this guide.
The Exam Explorer screen only displays if multiple exams have been included in the
export. If a single patient exam is burned to CD for your review, that file will automatically
display, revealing its contents and viewer options.
4. Double-click an entry to invoke the MedVIEW Express Exam Viewer and review the
included exam images and documents. For more information about the Exam
Viewer, see “MedVIEW Express Exam Viewer” on page 2-3 of this guide.

edVIEW Express is intended as a
viable, diagnostic viewing alternative for users who do not
have access to a more traditional PACS viewer. Designed to
provide all necessary tools for review of patient exams and
associated documents, MedVIEW Express furnishes a
quantity of necessary tools that are accessible from a variety of
locations. For example, many tools accessed from the
application’s Menu and Toolbar are also available for selection
from the Workspace Toolbar and right-click Context Menu.
This apparent redundancy was purposely built into the
application as a means of providing you with an intuitive,
flexible viewing solution that could be used in whatever In This Chapter...
manner you find most effective.

Exam Viewer
Once an exam is selected from Exam Explorer, all contained information displays within the
MedVIEW Express viewer. Comprised of a series of windowpanes, the viewer provides
immediate access to categorized exam content, patient demographics, exam reports, images,
image and annotation tools, and image thumbnails. For more details, see “Exam Viewer
Components” on page 2-3 of this guide.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-3
Figure 2-3: MedVIEW Express Application Components
Component Tiles
The major elements of patient exams all display within separate tiles, many of which exhibit a
custom toolbar.
Each tile displays as a separate window within the MedVIEW Express interface and, when
initially accessed, each appears stacked within a column as shown in see Figure 2-4 on
page 2-5. This configuration consists of a fully extended Image Workspace tile with all other
pertinent display tiles accessible from their layered titled bars.
There is the possibility of four tiles being included in this initial stacked view: Report, Properties
Panel, Image Workspace and Key Images. While the Image Workspace and Properties Panel tiles
always display for an opened exam, the Report tile will only appear if the exam contains a report and
the Key Images tile will only show if the Reading Physician has designated key images within the
exam. For more information about workspace display tiles, see “View Menu - Exam Viewer” on
page A-4 of this guide.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-5
Figure 2-5: MedVIEW Express Unstacked Component Tiles
When first opened, the column at the left of the interface displays unstacked tiles, but the tiles in this
column can be stacked by double-clicking the title bar of any contained tile.
While the initial size and arrangement of all component tiles is set by system default, both are
easily adjusted, thus enabling you to design a sized and display composition best suited to
your own requirements.
Component Tiles can be resized using a variety of methods. You may simply position your
mouse-pointer over the frame edge of the tile you wish you resize and then, with the left
mouse key depressed, drag the frame to increase or decrease the size of the tile. Another
resizing option is available using the Minimize/Maximize window button at the upper right
corner of each tile. Selecting this option on any normally displayed tile instantly expands the
tile to fill the entire Exam Viewer display area beneath the application menu bar and toolbar.
Clicking the button a second time, returns the tile to its original size.
The relocation of the displayed tiles is accomplished by simply dragging and dropping a tile
by its title bar. Once selected and moved, the tile’s outline is visible as you shift around the
interface and automatically resizes to fit any location within the frame. Release the left mouse
key you depressed to perform the drag, and the tile will display in its new location at its
previewed size.
Image Workspace
The Image Workspace tile dominates the MedVIEW Express interface, as this is where
patient exam images are displayed and manipulated. The workspace is extremely flexible,
allowing you to designate the number and placement of displayed images, providing fast
access to image and annotation tools from a variety of locations, and furnishing an Image
Toolbar that provides specific image information and linking options directly from the
displayed image itself.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-7
The Workspace tile provides you with a toolbar that contains the most consistently used
layout, display mode, manipulation, and annotation tools.
When scout images exist within an exam, this tool allows you to turn
the Reference Lines on and off.
Exam mode displays all exam images in sequential order within the
Image Workspace.
In Stack mode, all images within a series are organized in a single image
pane, one on top of the other so that you can view the images in
succession, like a film. When available, reference lines are shown
indicating the intersection position of orthogonal images from other
series in the workspace.
The Calibration tool allows you to specifically set or calibrate the ruler
measurement by allowing you to designate the scale at which the ruler
measures. For example, you mark out a specific length and then
stipulate the number of centimeters this space will include, thereby
enabling accurate measurements of large areas enclosed within a
limited viewing space. While available, the Calibration tool is not
usually needed, as calibration data is generally supplied with the images.
This tool is the default setting when an exam is first accessed, enabling
you to “Select” specific workspace displayed images or any annotation
you’ve added to an image. It is prominently displayed as a function
tool, however, as it clears previous annotation selections from memory.
For example, if you have accessed the angle tool to measure a section
of any displayed image, this tool remains active until another is chosen
or you click “Select.”
The Ruler tool enables you to measure the distance between two points
on an image and displays the exact measurement in units of
millimeters, centimeters, or inches. Should your application of the
Ruler produce an automated measurement in “pels,” you may need to
use the Calibration tool described above.
Also available for the quick selection and application of desired tools are the Workspace
Context Menu and the Tool Picker Menu.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-9
Figure 2-7: Workspace Context Menu with Annotations Flyout
Image Toolbar
When selected, the Image toolbar, shown in Figure 2-3 on page 2-4, displays in the
upper-right corner of each pane in the Image workspace. To toggle its display, select View
Show Image Toolbar from the application menu bar.
While all the information conveyed through the Image Toolbar is valuable, perhaps the most
important is the red Referential button, which displays to inform you that the associated
image is not of diagnostic quality. So important is this feature that the “R” button will display
in conjunction with a non-diagnostic quality image whether the Image Toolbar is shown or
not. Non-diagnostic image quality can be the result of many factors that include the
application of lossy compression, the use of insufficient display resolution when viewing
mammography images, or the application of some form of image processing.
Acceptable compression rations vary from modality to modality. The Radiology Department in each
facility should determine compression rates based on acceptable image quality. For low resolution
images such as CT, MR, US, and NM, we recommend low compression settings. This compression
should not exceed 1:10. For high resolution images, you can use a higher compression ratio,
however, you should not exceed a compression ration of 1:30.
Only displays with FDA Approval for Clearance for final interpretation of mammography images may
be used for final interpretation of Full-field digital mammography. (See NEMA XR 22-2006 quality
control manual template for manufacturers of displays and workstations labeled for final
interpretation of Full-field digital mammography).
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-11
When an image is diagnostic quality, the green Original button displays
on the Image toolbar. When the image is not diagnostic quality, the red
Referential button displays on the Image toolbar.
The Series Link button only appears on the Image Workspace toolbar
when the displayed image series are in Stack or Series mode. Once the
selected image series are linked, you can scroll all of the linked series in
the Image Workspace simultaneously using any of the scrolling
conventions.
Click the Series Link button to link image series in the same plane that
you have manually added to the Image Workspace. Press the Series
Link button again to unlink the image series from its group.
Additionally, you can click the down arrow to the right of the Series
Link button to link the selected series or link all image series that are in
the same plane. You can also remove a specific image series from a
series link, remove an entire image series link, or remove all image
series links.
Report
The Report tile displays a static version of a selected report or note, enabling you to review
the content but not conduct edits. Generally only a single report is affixed to an exam, in
which case, that document automatically displays in the Report tile by default. Should an
exam contain multiple reports or notes, however, the most current document initially displays.
You can easily view any other affixed reports by simply double-clicking the name of the one
you wish to review from its listing in the Exam Content tile. For more information, see
“Exam Content” on page 2-15 of this guide.
If a report does not exist for the exam you are reviewing, the Report Tile will not automatically
display.
Properties Panel
The Properties Panel tile provides a significant amount of information specific to the exam
you are reviewing. While not editable, the data displayed here includes Exam ID and Date;
Patient Name, ID, and Gender; Proc Code; Patient History; Exam Description, State, and
Read Status; and Physician data that includes Reading, Requesting and Other. While much of
this data is part of the detail included on Exam Explorer that is used to fully identify each
exam sent for your review, its presence within the Properties Panel enables you to recheck this
information without leaving the viewer interface.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-13
Figure 2-10: MedVIEW Express Properties Panel Tile
Key Image
Key Images are often designated by reading physicians to identify the specific images within a
larger exam that are most pertinent to a patient’s diagnosis. When Key Images are included in
an export file, they appear in the Key Image tile.
Exam Content
The Exam Content tile provides a great deal of information and can serve as an access point
for selected patient images and reports. The first two entries in the Exam Content tile furnish
demographic data for the patient and the corresponding exam. Other listed data includes the
listing of included Reports/Notes, the number of Image Series comprising the exam, with an
image by image listing that can be selected for inclusion within the Workspace.
Exam Contents presents its contained information as a data tree with each major information
division (Patient Name, Exam, Report, Image Series, etc.) displaying next to an
Additional Information box when supplementary data is available. To access this data, simply
click the Additional Information or plus-box next to the desired heading.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-15
Figure 2-12: MedVIEW Express Exam Content Tile
Additional information boxes may display at any level within the data tree and always behave
in the same manner. For example, when you open the Image Series box, you will find each
exam series listed individually adjacent to its own additional information box. Select this
second tier box to reveal a listing of every image contained within the selected series.
You may drag and drop images from the Exam Content tile directly into the Image Workspace, and
you may do this at the series or individual image level. Remember, however, that image series are
connected and that adding a selected image to the workspace in fact adds the entire series.
Multiple reports and/or notes are accessible from Exam Content under the Reports
additional information box. While the system initially displays the most current report/note
when an exam is opened, you can easily replace that default with any listed document by
simply double-clicking the report you wish to view.
Thumbnails
The Thumbnails tile displays mini-versions of exam series or images that provide a quick
reference for the size of the exam, its study makeup, and at what location within a study
currently displayed images are located.
The initial thumbnail display hinges on exam type. For example, CT, MR, US, and PET exams
are displayed in the thumbnails by series, with each series represented by a single image. When
the exam is a CR or DX, every image contained in the exam is displayed as a separate
thumbnail.
The Thumbnails tile also features a toolbar that enables you to determine the way the
thumbnails themselves display.
When you place the Thumbnails in Series Display Mode, only the first
image of each included series appears as a thumbnail.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 2-17
Application Toolbar
The Application toolbar displays at the top of the MedVIEW Express viewer under the menu
bar and contains tools that enable fast interface view changes, such as placing the viewer in
theater mode, opening and closing the Report, Exam Content, and Thumbnails tiles,
Inverting gray-scale color ratios on selected images, and accessing Help.
The Open toolbar icon is only active when the Exam Explorer is
displayed, as this option enables you to quickly open a highlighted
entry within MedVIEW Express. (While the icon is visible from within
the viewer, it is disabled in MedVIEW Express because exams cannot
be opened by the viewer.)
Opens and/or Closes the Exam Content Tile, thereby providing you
with additional viewer space. This feature is also available from the
View Menu. For more information, see “View Menu - Exam Viewer”
on page A-4 of this guide.
Opens and/or Closes the Report Tile to provide you with additional
viewer space. This feature is also available from the View Menu. For
more information, see “View Menu - Exam Viewer” on page A-4 of
this guide.
This tool enables you to open, delete, and even create new workspaces,
and while it functions, it is not recommended for use in MedVIEW
Express. Designed to display additional workspaces across multiple
monitors, that activity is not supported in MedVIEW Express and, if
employed, will only divide your interface and ultimately restrict your
viewing capabilities. This feature is also available from the View Menu
and the Workspace Context Menu. For more information, see either
“View Menu - Exam Viewer” on page A-4 of this guide or “Workspace
Context Menu Descriptions” on page B-1 of this guide.
When selected, Theater Mode closes every viewer element except the
image workspace, which is expanded to encompass the entire interface.
This display provides the greatest possible viewing area, and while the
Application Menu and Toolbar and the Image Workspace toolbar are
hidden in Theater Mode, the workspace context menu enables you to
easily manipulate images, apply annotations, and even escape the
Theater Mode interface. This feature is also available from the View
Menu and the Workspace Context Menu. For more information, see
either “View Menu - Exam Viewer” on page A-4 of this guide or
“Workspace Context Menu Descriptions” on page B-1 of this guide.
The Invert feature is only enabled when an image located within the
workspace is selected. When this is the case, click Invert to reverse the
color/gray-scale of the chosen image. Clicking Invert a second time,
returns the image to its original color/contrast view. This feature is also
available from the Image Menu and the Workspace Context Menu. For
more information, see either “Image Menu” on page A-8 of this guide
or “Workspace Context Menu Descriptions” on page B-1 of this guide.
The Reset option is only available when an image within the viewer
workspace is selected, and then is used to discard any alterations made
to that image and return it to its original condition. This feature is also
available from the Image Menu and the Workspace Context Menu. For
more information, see either “Image Menu” on page A-8 of this guide
or “Workspace Context Menu Descriptions” on page B-1 of this guide.
All toolbars displayed in MedVIEW Express are constructed with an Auto-Hide feature that allows
you to increase the available viewer workspace by closing selected toolbars until they are needed.
When Auto-Hide is enabled, the affected toolbar is invisible and displays only when your mouse
pointer approaches its normal display location. Conversely, when you move the mouse pointer away
from the toolbar, it again disappears from view. Auto-Hide is easily engaged/disengaged by
right-clicking a specific tool bar and selecting/unselecting Autohide Dock Area from the context
menu.

MedVIEW Express’s full complement of tools and system
functionality are defined in the appendices: Menu Bar
Descriptions and Workspace Context Menu Descriptions. For
more information, see “Menu Bar Descriptions” on page A-1
of this guide and “Workspace Context Menu Descriptions” on
page B-1 of this guide.
Image Layout
Once an exam is displayed within MedVIEW Express, the images are arrayed in a matrix or
grid within the Workspace tile. The way the images are arranged and the actual number
displayed form the basis of Image Layout. MedVIEW Express provides a number of tools for
customizing the image layout view, all of which are accessible from the Application Menu Bar,
the Workspace Menu Bar, and the Workspace Context menu.
Matrix Layout
Matrix Layout specifically refers to the number and physical arrangement of exam image
panes displayed by MedVIEW Express. The initial or default layout is generally one
configured for the modality that created the images, but this display is easily altered.
To quickly resize an image to the full size of the Image Workspace, double-click the image.
To return to the former layout, double-click the resized image.
Display Modes
Display Modes enable you to control the way exam images display and advance within the
MedVIEW Express workspace. To apply a display mode, select an available configuration
using either the Exam Mode, Series Mode, or Stack Mode icons on the Workspace toolbar.
You may also access display mode options by selecting the Workspace option from the
Application Menu Bar or the Workspace Context menu.
• Exam Mode
Exam Mode displays all exam images in sequential order within the Image Workspace.
For example, if an exam has two image series and you select Hang Exam, all images in the
first series display in the Image Workspace followed by all images in the second series.
When using the Exam hang mode, all the images for the exam automatically display in the
image workspace and there is no need to click and drag the images from the Thumbnails
view to the Image Workspace.
• Series Mode
Series Mode (called Hang Series when accessed from either the Application Menu Bar or
Workspace Context Menu) sequentially displays the images of a particular series across all
available Image Workspace layout panes. For more information on additional Series Mode
access locations, refer to “Application Menu Bar” on page 2-17 of this guide and
“Workspace Context Menu” on page 2-9 of this guide.
If all series images cannot be displayed simultaneously, scrolling will advance the series,
causing the currently displayed images to be replaced by succeeding ones. When an exam
contains multiple series, changing the image series in the workspace is quickly
accomplished by dragging and dropping from the Thumbnail tile. Simply select any
displayed thumbnail from the new series you wish to review and drag it into the Image
Workspace. Regardless of which image is initially selected, the new series will replace the
one currently in the workspace and will display sequentially from the beginning. For more
information on Thumbnails, see “Thumbnails” on page 2-16 of this guide.
• Stack Mode
In Stack Mode, (called Hang Stack when accessed from the Application Menu Bar or
Workspace Context Menu) all images within a series are organized one on top of the
other so you can view them in succession like a sequence in a film. For more information
on additional Series Mode access locations, refer to “Application Menu Bar” on page 2-17
of this guide and “Workspace Context Menu” on page 2-9 of this guide. Stack mode is
often used to examine CT and MR images because you can view multiple series
simultaneously and display reference lines that identify their intersection on the
corresponding series.
To view another image series, click and drag a thumbnail from the series of your choice
from the Thumbnails tile into the Image Workspace. Regardless of which series image is
dragged into the workspace or how many images comprise the entire stack, the first
image in the series always displays and only a single workspace pane is occupied. Using
this method, you can add a series to an empty pane or instantly replace a currently
displayed series with one selected from the thumbnails. For more information on
Thumbnails, see “Thumbnails” on page 2-16 of this guide.
Because of the obvious comparative benefits associated with viewing multiple series in
Stack mode, MedVIEW Express also enables you to temporarily link stacked series,
regardless of plane or frame of reference, and thereby scroll through each simultaneously.
For more information, see “Workspace” on page B-9 of this guide.
Scrolling Images
Once images are added to the workspace, navigating through them is best accomplished by
scrolling, as this action advances images fluidly regardless of whether you are browsing a
single series or the entire exam. MedVIEW Express provides you with several methods for
scrolling, with the two most frequently used being the scroll wheel on your mouse and the
application’s scroll tool.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 3-3
Working with Exam Images
If the workspace is organized in Exam or Series mode, no specific image or pane needs to
be designated, as the process of scrolling will advance you through either the entire study
or the displayed series. If the workspace is in Stack mode, however, place the mouse
pointer over the specific series you wish to scroll.
2. With the mouse pointer in the proper position, move the scroll wheel down, or
towards yourself, to advance the images sequentially, first to last.
3. Move the scroll wheel up, or away from you, to reverse the scrolling order.
3. Depress and hold the left mouse key and move your mouse to the right to advance
the images sequentially, first to last, or to the left to reverse the scrolling order.
You may also scroll through images using your keyboard arrow keys. Move your mouse
pointer into the workspace; select the series you wish to scroll; and then tap either the “Up”
or “Right” arrow key to advance the series one image at a time. To scroll backwards, tap
the “Down” or “Left” arrow key.
Image Text
There are often many layers of information available to you when reviewing imaged exams.
The image captures themselves provide the bulk of that data, but there also may exist patient
and exam demographic information, image sizing data, and window/level settings. Image
Text is recorded by the modality used to produce the images at the instant an image is
captured and is displayed by MedVIEW Express at the four corners of the image.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 3-5
Working with Exam Images
When Image Text is displayed, applied overlays are identified at the lower left corner of the affected
image.
As shown in Figure 3-1 on page 3-5, Image Text can provide much necessary detail
regarding exam elements but can potentially obscure essential portions of an image. To
eliminate any such distraction, MedVIEW Express provides display options that enable
you to turn off the image text function or incrementally reduce detail so that less image
space is obscured. When first accessed, your default view depends upon the default
settings established by the preparing facility; to adjust these settings:
The data defined within the boundaries of the Verbose, Concise, and Minimal designations
is determined by the facility preparing the exam. These categories are not defined by the
inclusion of any predetermined level of information. In other words, there are no hard and
fast rules dictating exactly what data is contained within any of the image text detail
categories.
1. From the Application Menu Bar, select View Show Image Text to access the
following flyout:
The Show option functions as the Image Text on/off switch. When Show is
unchecked, Image Text does not display.
2. To display text, make sure the Show option appears checked.
When Image Text is not selected, clicking any one of the detail level options (Verbose,
Concise, or Minimal) automatically selects and engages the Show option.
3. Select the Image Text detail level you wish to display. Once these selections are made,
the images displayed within MedVIEW Express instantly display text.
2. From the flyout, you may choose to select All Users, thereby displaying all created
annotations simultaneously, as shown in Figure 3-2 on page 3-6 of this guide; you may
hide all annotation overlays by selecting None; or you may choose to display overlays
based on creator by selecting from the list of users.
When Image Text is turned on, displayed annotation overlays are identified by user.

Working with Exam Images
The Magnify Image Tool can also be accessed from either the Application Menu Bar or the
Workspace Context Menu. For more information see “Menu Bar Descriptions” on page A-1 of this
guide and “Image Tools” on page B-6 of this guide).
Pan/Magnify
When you resize an image, it may become too big to fit within its pane in the Image
Workspace. Should this occur, the Pan/Magnify tool allows you to move the image within its
pane and simultaneously increase the zoom ratio for the image.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 3-9

Working with Exam Images
The number of images affected by the application of new Window/Level settings depends
upon the display mode in use at the time of the alteration. Any changes made to any image
displayed in Stack Mode will automatically be applied to every image in the stacked series,
whereas Window/Level changes made to single images displayed in Series or Exam mode will
only be applied to the designated image.
Window/Level modifications remain in effect, regardless of display mode changes, until you Reset
the defaults (ImageReset or Reset from the Workspace Context Menu) or close the exam.
4. Completely turn off the Window/Level tool by accessing the Select option from the
Workspace Toolbar or by pressing your keyboard’s Esc key.
3. Release the mouse button to apply the window/level settings designated by your
selection.
The Window/Level Region tool generally works best on conventional x-ray images where
the contrast differences are smaller than on CT or MR images. If the automatically
calculated window/level value does not produce the desired results, it means that very few
pixels with extreme values exist within the selected range. We recommend selecting a
different region or applying window/level settings with the Window/Level tool.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 3-13
Working with Exam Images
2. From the available presets, select the one you would like to apply.
Image Invert
While not technically a Window/Level tool, MedVIEW Express’ Invert option allows you to
reverse an image’s grayscale or color values and thereby provide a contrast variant that may
provide greater image clarity. Any image may be inverted, including those to which other
contrast modifications, such as Window/Level and Pseudocolor have been added. For more
information on Pseudocolor, see “Pseudocolor” on page B-5 of this guide.
Annotating Images
MedVIEW Express includes a number of annotation tools that are easily applied to selected
images. These tools enable you to measure distances, angles, area, and circumference of
designated areas within an image.
The application of annotations differs depending upon the type that is used. For simple linear
measurements and basic area/perimeter/circumference measuring tools, a single click, drag,
and release of the left mouse button is all that’s necessary to place the annotation. Other more
sophisticated tools such as angles and polygons require more specific application that requires
the completion of one line and then the creation of another.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 3-15
Working with Exam Images
Working in tandem with the application of annotations is MedVIEW Express’ Copy to Series
option, which enables you to select an applied annotation and automatically add it to every
image within a series.
This feature is applicable to all annotations (except Text Stamps, which automatically replicate
and Cobb and Rotational Angles, which defy linking due to their relationship with other
marks) but is especially effective when used with ROI tools that produce measurements.
MedVIEW Express also includes the ability to apply Text Stamps to MR and CT procedures
consisting of multiple images grouped by orientation. Used very often for spine labeling, this
feature allows you to add a predefined text stamp annotation to a single image and have it
automatically appear on all other images within the series that meet the criteria of the stamp.
For example, if you place an MR\Cervical Vertebrae stamp that is configured to display on all
images within 200 mm of the sagittal plane on one image, the stamp will automatically display
on every other series image fitting the spacial parameters stipulated by the stamp.
Once any one of the above referenced annotations is added to an image, it may then be
resized or relocated within the image pane. Mean and Standard Deviation measurements
recalculate as rectangles and ellipses are moved, but the area and circumference of these
annotations remains unchanged unless the size of the annotation is altered. Due to the
specific point to point measurement derived from the ruler annotation, this mark may also
be moved, but never beyond its initial starting point unless it is resized.
5. With the completion of a line segment, the vertex functions as a pivot around which
you can rotate a third point, that when secured, will define the angle. You will notice
that as you rotate this final point around the vertex, the measurement of the created
angle displays.
6. Once you reach the desired angle, click the left mouse button to secure the final point
and complete the annotation.
If you wish to measure the angle between the second line and a third, simply draw a third
line on the image.

Copy to Series
One of the most time saving and effective tools for manipulating annotation marks is
“Copy to Series”. In accordance with its name, the Copy to Series feature allows you to
automatically reproduce a selected annotation and then affix it to each image in a series.
This fundamental behavior is applicable for any displayed image series, regardless of
Workspace display mode configuration. For more information on display modes, see
“Display Modes” on page 3-2 of this guide.
Display mode becomes vitally important, however, depending upon the functionality you
wish the annotations to possess and how they will be used.
3. Once the annotation is applied, hover your mouse pointer over it and click the right
button to display a short Annotations menu.
4. Click Copy To Series to add the selected annotation to each series image and
automatically link the entire set.
The annotation will remain in place throughout the entire series until you delete it or close
the exam.

Window/Level
The Window/Level menu contains commands that provide you with a variety of options for
altering the Window/Level settings of selected images.
• Presets
Presets are specifically defined and saved window/level optimizations that can be
associated with a specific modality or body part. When available, these display as available
adjustments for images meeting the predetermined modality or body part criteria.
• Entire Image
The Entire Image option sets the window width to the maximum range of grayscale
contained in the image(s) selected in the active Image Workspace. When this
window/level function is applied to multiple images, each image is optimized separately.
• Control
The Control option displays a small control panel that provides you with a set of tools for
physically applying window/leveling adjustments either incrementally or by specific
measurement. Width, Level, and Scale slide bars enable you to gradually alter the While
Width and Level numeric fields at the right of each corresponding slide bar allow you to
enter specific numeric values and thereby alter window/level specifically. All changes
made to images using the Control option designations are immediately displayed as image
text at the lower right corner of each affected image.
• Reset
The Reset feature allows you to return images, on which window/level adjustments have
been made, to their original default condition. This feature must be applied to each
affected image individually unless the altered images are all part of a single image stack, in
which case, reset any associated image will automatically reset every image in the stack.
• Linear
The Linear setting is generally the most common gray-scale distribution method in
digital imaging. When you select this option, MedVIEW Express applies the gray-scale
values evenly along the selected window width. For linear window/level transformations,
the image text in the lower right corner of each affected pane is identified using the
format W xxxx L yyyy.
• Sigmoid
The Sigmoid setting typically provides more contrast than the linear function near the
ends of the window width range when the gray-scale values approach white and black.
This setting better approximates the image as it appears on film. When selected,
MedVIEW Express applies the gray-scale values for the window width and level you
selected using a standard Sigmoid function. For Sigmoid window/level transformations,
the image text in the lower right corner of each affected pane in the Image Workspace
identifies the window/level using the format W xxxx L yyyy SIG.
Zoom
The Zoom menu furnishes you with a selection of pre-configured magnification options.
• 0.5x
Resizes the selected image(s) to a .5x zoom ratio.
• 1.0x
Resizes the selected image(s) to a 1.0x zoom ratio.
• 1.5x
Resizes the selected image(s) to a 1.5x zoom ratio.
• 2.0x
Resizes the selected image(s) to a 2.0x zoom ratio.

The Horizontal option flips a selected image 180 degrees along a horizontal axis.
Pseudocolor
This feature allows you to apply Pseudocolor to displayed images, thereby creating greater
contrast within an image. When applied, the pseudocolor maps some or all ranges of
gray-scale values within the image to color values. When any of the menu options listed below
are selected, the defined color pattern is applied to the image.
• None
• Oil Film
• Dark Blue to Bright Red
• Green to Red
• Thermal
• Bright Rainbow
• Saturations
• Reset
The Reset option discards any applied Pseudocolor and returns the image to its original
default condition.
Invert
As the name indicates, this feature reverses the color or gray-scale presentation of any
selected image. As with most other MedVIEW Express tools, Invert can be used in
conjunction with other features. For example, following the application of a pseudocolor
mask, Invert can be used to reverse the shading of the pseudocolor.
Reset
When accessed, this menu heading overrides any applied image annotations or manipulations
and returns an image to its original default settings.
Image Processing
The tools contained in this menu selection are designed for use with 24 and 32 bit color
images and provide greater contrast values for more effective evaluation.
• Stretch Contrast
The Stretch Contrast tool determines the maximum and minimum values of each color
channel in the image and enhances the contrast and brightness of the images RGB (red,
green and blue) values by stretching the lowest and highest values to their fullest range.
NET_MVXG_V7.2.0_1 B-5
• Red Filter
As its name implies, the Red Filter enables you to filter the color red out of a displayed
image to provide a clearer view of certain details. When the Red Filter is applied, previous
red coloration is displayed in grayscale.
Image Tools
