I learned that the game was invented in England in the early days of the 20th century
and was originally called Ping-Pong.
I learned that the name "Ping-Pong" was invented by the English firm J. Jaques and Son
at the end of the 1800s and later trademarked in the United States by Parker Brothers,
the board game company.
In addition, I learned that Ivor Montague is the Father of Table Tennis.
Also, I learned that the sport originated in Victorian England, where it was played among
the upper-class as an after-dinner parlor game.
I am also informed that in April 24, 1927, the English Table Tennis Association was
created. It was chaired and directed by Ivor Montague, who was the son of Lord
Ewatthling.
I learned that the toss of a coin or another form of lot-drawing determines which of the
players shall serve first.
I am informed that a match usually consists of the best of seven games (the first to win
four), but in competition this can also be best out of five or even nine.
Also, I learned that if a serve goes straight into the net and does not pass over into the
court on the other side, then it is a point for the opponent.
I also learned that if a serve hits the net, but goes over, it is considered a ‘let’, and can
be taken again with no penalty.
Also, this game is won by being the first player to win 11 points, and be at least 2 points
ahead of his or her opponent. If both players have won 10 points, then the first player to
get a 2 point lead wins the game.
