Black History Month letting me make that

The month of February was Black History announcement and I hope
Month. We got a chance to speak with fellow that in the future they will
student Seala Matthias who worked all month be able to have a Black
to promote and spread awareness. Read History Month program to
below to hear her thoughts on the subject: further educate others and
“A few weeks ago, I made an promote Black culture.”
announcement on the school intercom
regarding Black History Month and the
importance of it in today’s society. Growing up
in the Virgin Islands, or any Caribbean Island for
that matter, I had such different cultural
experiences than one would have being born
and raised in the states. Culture is such an
important part of my heritage and background,
especially since the U.S. Virgin Islands is about
76% Black or Afro-Caribbean. Because of this,
Black History month is a holiday that we take
very seriously and one that we celebrate
through performing songs, poems, dances, and
plays as well as creating art that reflects the
struggles our ancestors went through and
celebrates the accomplishments that has got
us where we are today. Even in a school where
the majority of the population is Caucasians, it’s
still important that we recognize the African
American experience because, whether we like
it or not, it’s part of all our history. I appreciate
