1- INTRODUCTION TO SURVEY

Definition of survey in language term is a way of looking, survey, check, measure and
produce map. And for survey in technical term is a science, art and technology of
determining the relative position of point above, on or beneath the earth’s surface.
The definition of levelling survey is an operation required in the determination or
comparison of heights of points on the surface of the earth. The survey that we using for
this project is levelling survey.
The purpose of survey is to collect field data that we surveyed in the proposed area, the
second is to determine the dimensions of the plan the area that surveyed and contours
of the field of any part of the earth’s surface, third is to prepare a plan or map the area
that we surveyed, the forth is to establish boundaries of the land and act as a divider in
plan or map, and lastly is to measure area and volume and to select a suitable site for
an engineering project like construction works and many others.
2- WORK PROCEDURE

2.1- Planning And Field Observation

2.1.1 – Location of proposed site (key plan, location plan, site plan)

KEY PLAN OF KELANTAN (NTS)

LOCATION PLAN OF PASIR MAS (NTS)

surveying
2.1.2 – Method Used
The classification by function of surveying, it have 4 category. The first is based on
accuracy desired. The second is based on purposed of survey. The third is based on
place of survey and lastly is based on instrument.
The classification based on accuracy desired have a plane survey and geodetic survey.
The based of purposed survey is engineering survey, and defence survey. The third
classification of survey is based on survey. It have hydrographic survey, topographic
survey, photogrammetric survey. And the last of classification is based on instrument
used is chain survey, traverse survey, tacheometry survey, levelling survey, and
satellite based on survey.
The method that we are using for this field work is levelling survey. This is a method of
surveying in which the relative vertical heights of the points are determined by
employing a automatic level and a graduated staff.

Figure 2.1.2a shows a levelling survey

2.1.3 – Instrument Used

1. Automatics level

A dumpy level, builder's auto level, leveling instrument, or automatic level is an optical
instrument used to establish or verify points in the same horizontal plane. It is used in
surveying and building with a vertical staff to measure height differences and to transfer,
measure and set heights.

2. Levelling staff

A level staff, also called levelling rod, is a graduated wooden or aluminium rod, used
with a levelling instrument to determine the difference in height between points or
heights of points above a datum surface.
3. Bubble staff/bull’ eye level

The bull’ eye level is used for maintaining both level rods and sighting poles in a vertical
position. An out of adjustment bull’s eye level can cause accumulative error in level
lines. Although the sighting pole is infrequently used for traversing, an out of adjustment
bull’s eye level used on sighting poles can cause error in both angle and distance
measurements.
A simple method for checking for gross error in bull’s eye level sdjustment is to check it
against a previously checked door jamb or other permanent building part. Other, more
elaborate, checking procedures can be developed using pump lines or other devices.

4. Tripod

A tripod is a portable three-legged frame, used as a platform for supporting

the weight and maintaining the stability of some other object. A tripod provides stability
against downward forces and horizontal forces and movements about horizontal axes.
The positioning of the three legs away from the vertical centre allows the tripod better
leverage for resisting lateral forces.
5. Measuring tape

A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler. It consists of a ribbon of cloth,

plastic, fibre glass, or metal strip with linear-measurement markings. It is a common
measuring tool.

6. safety jacket

Safety jacket is used for indoor and outdoor work.

7. Safety helmet

The helmet's shell is the rigid outer section of the helmet, and is usually made from
polyethylene, abs (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene – a thermoplastic) or fibreglass
hardened with polyester resins the basic function of the shell is to provide protection by
reducing the force of a falling object striking.

8. Safety boots

A steel-toe boot (also known as a safety boot, steel-capped boot or safety shoe) is a
durable boot or shoe that has a protective reinforcement in the toe which protects the
foot from falling objects or compression, usually combined with a mid sole plate to
protect against punctures from below.

9. The recording book

The function is to record the raw data of the field.

10. Change plate

When the staff is placed on a soft ground, the staff must be placed on the change plate
which is triangular metal plate
