Generic Name of Drug:


Meperidine hydrochloride

Drug Classification:
Opioid agonist/opioid analgesic

Drug Action/s:
Meperidine binds with the kappa opiate receptors in the central nervous system
producing analgesia and sedation. Alters the perception of and response to painful stimuli,
while producing generalized CNS depression.

Dose, Frequency and Route of Administration (doctor’s order):


50 mg IV P.R.N.

Indication/s (reason/s) for administering the medicine to the patient:


It is indicated or given for the management of moderate to severe pain especially during
labor.

List two (2) important nursing responsibilities you have to consider when administering
the medication:

1. Assess the patient’s blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate before periodic
administration of the drug.
2. Withhold the dose if signs and symptoms of hypotension and respiratory depression
occurs.

List three (3) patient health teachings in relation to the medication:

1. Inform the patient that the drug may cause dizziness and drowsiness.
2. Teach the patient to change position slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension.
3. Advise the patient to call for assistance in ambulating and other activities that
require alertness
