A Building Shaped by Music

WORD:

Procession: In architecture, it is the act of moving within the building of complex

going from one part to another
Museum Fatigue: The type of exhaustion you get from walking from place to place,
stopping, thinking about what you are seeing, then continuing. This happens often
in a museum. (urban dictionary)

INTRODUCTION

This project turns “Form Follows Function” on its head. In the earlier years, you were asked to start
a project with a plan and work from there. This design exercise challenges this idea and trains you
as a designer to be versatile, adaptive and begin to think outside of the box. More often than not,
architectural design can start with a pre-conceived notion on what you want the building to look
like from the exterior. In actual practice, you as you design the exterior, you go back and modify,
tweak the plan and s section to make it work for the exterior. There is an inherent relationship
between the three and you should learn how to work on three aspects at the same time. This major
plate developed is in the traditions of Hadid, Eisenman, Locsin and Hedjuk where function can be

made to work (within acceptable reason) in any pre-conceived form.

This project calls for the design of a Modern Art Museum that will showcase both local and
international modern art. As there has been a surgency in popularity of modern and abstract art, as
evidenced by the local auctions and art fairs. This museum is intended to be a repository of
abstract and modern art that will serve to record and catalog the thoughts and ideas of our times.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Using your music module sculptures as the basis for the exterior of your museum, research,
develop and design a Museum for Philippine Modern Art.

Note: The final exterior and plan of your museum should resemble as close as possible the music
module model made. Slight modifications are allowed during the design process to accommodate
for the function but the shape of the plans should be close to the base shapes of your sculptures.

RESEARCH

1. Look up other architects who have used music as the basis of their design.
2. Look the requirements for a proper art museum
3. Look up the National Building Code
4. Look up the guidelines of the site.
5. Develop a comprehensive space program based on research of the spaces needed for a
museum.
6. Look up the different Philippine Artists whose works will be included in the museum.

MAJOR PLATE OBJECTIVES:

1 To be able develop a new design mythology that gets inspiration form sources other
than other buildings.
2 To be able to plan properly irregularly shaped buildings.
3 To be able develop well-coordinated and coherent schematic plans that include all
columns windows and doors in the plans.
4 To be able to develop well-coordinated and accurate sections and elevations where in
windows, doors, steps are all accurately placed in plans, sections and elevations.
5 To develop and hone planning skills that go beyond the orthogonal.
6 To develop the ability to work in plan, section, elevation and perspective at the same
time, going back and forth from one to another.
7 To produce drop dead gorgeous drawing tra-digitally.

SPACE PROGRAM:

DESIGN 5

Develop a comprehensive space program for the museum.
The space program SHOULD INCLUDE the following spaces + more based on your research.
1. Permanent Exhibition Galleries for Philippine Art
2. Rotating Gallery
3. Conservation Laboratory Paper
4. Conservation Laboratory Canvas
5. Conservation Laoratory Photographs
6. Storage Facilies
7. Museum Shop
8. Museum Research Library
9. Viewing Tower
10. Sculpture Garden
11. Ample Parking
12. Lecture Hall / Auditorium
13. Performance Art Lobby
14. BOH facilities
15. Administrative Offices

RULES:
1. Students should use their sculptures as the basis of the final design
2. Final space program should be +/- 10% of design spaces
3. Circulation is not included in the space program and can be added in the plans
4. All plans, elevations, sections and perspectives should be accurate in terms of
measurements, drafting and relationships.
5. All Design Guideline and Codes should be complied with

DRAWING REQUIREMENTS:

1. Comprehensive Space Program submitted within week 1

2. Submit a research paper outlining a design strategy and concepts to be used within week 1
3. Concept Sheet which must contain the following: Major Plate title, Specific Name of the Project,
Project Brief, Explanation of the Design Philosophy with your Design Concept, Design
Objectives, illustrated explanation of your design solutions, discussion of Theory of Architecture
principles of design used, design considerations and other articulations to express your
thoughts about your final output (such as but not limited to behavior analysis, space program,
matrix, bubble diagram, traffic analysis, diagrammatic flow patterns, site analysis, orientation
considerations: views, wind, solar angles, among others).
4. Site Development Plan at scale 1:300 meters or bigger
5. Floor Plans (with furniture, windows, doors, columns, steps) 1:200 meters or bigger
6. Two (2) Rendered Elevations and Two (2) Rendered Sections of the building at scale 1:200
