Introduction
This how to gives you 3 easy methods to configure L3 management of the Ubiquiti Unifi Access Points.
By following this how to you will learn how to adopt a Unifi AP that is on a separate network from the Management Server.
The only requirement is that you are able to access the management server from the separated network \ subnet. If you
cannot access the server the AP will also not be able to access the server
There is a 4th DHCP based option, but I am not going to talk about that option in this how to
Steps (4 total)
1 Categories Resources New Discussion
On your DNS server create a CNAME record called "unifi" that points to the server that you installed the Unifi Management
software on, When the AP powers on it will resolve the unifi DNS record and report to your server
2
Use UniFi Discovery Utility
Expand
If you can't use the DHCP or DNS methods you can use the Unifi Discovery tool
Unifi Discovery tool is installed along with your UniFi controller. You can install the controller software onto a laptop so you
get the discovery tool. That way you don't need to take you server with you.
On Windows, it's in Start Menu>Ubiquiti UniFi>UniFiDiscover
To perform an adoption with the discovery utility (assumes your AP is in the default config). Open the utility and wait for a
minute while it searches and discovers your AP's
Select the AP you want to manage. click manage and modify the inform URL to be the address or your server that you
installed the management software on. Then click apply.
Note: Make sure the Unifi Management Server software isn't running one the machine you are using for the discovery tool. It
will prevent the discovery tool from functioning correctly
3
Use SSH to manually point the AP to the Controller
For this step you will have to determine the DHCP address the AP acquired. There a many ways to do this and I am no
going to cover them in my instructions.
Once you have found the DHCP address use a tool like Putty to establish an SSH connection to the AP. The default
credentials are
Username = ubnt
Password = ubnt
Enter the following commands where ipofcontroller is the IP of your controller
mcacli
setinform http://ipofcontroller:8080/inform
The AP will reboot.
207.200.29.91
Enter the following command a second time
setinform http://ipofcontroller:8080/inform
Go to your Controller and the AP should now be showing under the Pending tab.

Log into your Server

Log into your server and you should see the new AP in the pending state ready to be adopted
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have now know how to Adopt a Unifi AP that is on a separate network \ subnet from your management
server

Can I suggest in step 1 that you add the CNAME needed? Found it online after reading your howto, and then chasing down
the DHCP option as well. Love this stuff.

Finally, some clear instructions. I love Ubiquiti stuff, but there instructions genuinely suck.
