On 11/5/2020 students at Fallowfield campus of Manchester University
Pt. 1: Fenced In in the UK were not warned before the fence was erected. Students were
also now subject to ID checks at the only exit.

University claims it was put up as a means of preventing access by

non-residents.

This comes after heavy government pressure to keep students on

campus and even teach in person despite the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Groups like the Independent Sage have criticised these government
guidances.

“We just feel like prisoners at the moment. Recently we had this boy
who committed suicide and this is their response, to lock us in. This is
ridiculous” -Manchester Student

NUS (National Union of Students) President claims students have been

“policed, threatened and blamed at all levels”
On 11/15/2020 19 year old Zac Adan was stopped by
Pt. 2: Racism Row campus security on the basis that he “didn’t look like he
belonged in the area”, as officers cited the “drug dealing
happening on campus”.

Before Adan had the chance to show his ID he was pinned

up against a wall by the security officers. They also told
Adan to stop “playing the race card”.

University of Manchester Statement, “We are deeply

concerned by these images. We have spoken to the
student concerned, launched a full investigation and have
suspended the security officers (without prejudice) pending
the results of this investigation.”
“This university needs to do better. First
we’re locked in like animals, and now we’re

being stereotyped and physically assaulted
outside our own flats, that we are paying to
live in, by the people that are paid to keep us
safe.”-Manchester Student
Pt. 3: Call to Resign On 11/6/2020 students protest calling for resignation of Vice
Chancellor Nancy Rothwell

Manchester Stand Up to Racism President says Adan was only

stopped because he was black “It sends a clear message that
this university and the people employed by the university – the
security firm – see black people as the other, that they don’t
belong on campus. That is just unacceptable.”

Students now occupying Owens Park Tower demanding 40%

rent decrease after curriculum moved online. Organizers felt the
institution's offer of 20% was a ‘slap in the face”

On 11/19/2020 Prof. Rothwell goes on BBC News and claims

she apologised to Zac Adan. The next day, she posts a video
apologizing for misspeaking in her interview with BBC News.
She had not in fact had contact with Adan.

Literature Review
❖ No playbook on how to handle COVID19.
❖ Leadership is situational
❖ the necessary changes to pedagogical practices have created an ilk of turbulence. And the fluidity of the crisis has often
caused the College’s leadership team to feel as if it is making decisions while walking in the dark.
❖ COVID-19 has forced the College’s hand to make some abrupt decisions that have affected the student living community
and unintentionally created a sense of distrust between students and administration.
➢ In class instruction moved remotely
➢ New grading systems set in place to accommodate student’s learning
➢ Students being turned away from college housing and on campus
➢ Financial strains
➢ Technology
➢ Facilities maintenance
➢ Admissions
Leadership Styles
Tempered Radicalism. Tempered radicals are boundary spanners, capable of translating their vision to attract the values of
various stakeholders. They can retain the scope of perception and experience transition from several viewpoints. They use the power, initially
conceived as a tool for domination, to turn into an efficient platform for positive change (Lorde, 1984).
Leadership Styles Continued
Commitment #1: Clarify Values. Before you can become a credible leader-one who connects “what you say” with
“what you do”-you first need to find your authentic voice, the most genuine expression of who you are. (Kouzes, 2018)
Recommendations for Practice
Resignation of Leader

● Not much chance for reconciliation after incident of false apology, best step
forward is full accountability with humility

Restorative Justice and Mental Health services for students

● Makeup for services that were not previously supplied to students

Russell Group of Universities partner with NUS UK to create series of Diversity

Trainings

● Prepare staff, students and faculty to become more aware of experiences of

individuals classified under the “BAME” acronym
