Course Facilitators: Ar. Ian M. Billano; Ar. Rameses P. Pineda
Ar. Charmaine Janelle S. Quiambao; Ar. Jenine Andrea De Luna;
Ar. Bianca Y. Delos Reyes
An Island Resort
Intended Learning Outcomes:
1) Analyze the relationship of human behavior and biosafety
protocols to the architectural spaces and then apply it
through formulation of schemes and Floor plans.
2) Analyze the role of the Natural Environment along with
human intervention and behavior in Architectural Design
and then apply it on spatial and basic site development
planning
3) Apply basic principles of Landscape Architecture
4) Apply basic Green Building concepts and ideas in the
overall design
5) Compare and contrast various Architectural characters
through building forms, details and facades from which
the student shall assess which character best apply to the
preferred architectural solution
6) Design Building façade with desired and applicable
Architectural Character
7) Evaluate the Final Output of his/her Architectural Design
8) Argue on the merits of the Final Design output
9) Defend the Project proposal
Target Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Indicators: By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young
people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Indicators: By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and
sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries
Goal 15: Life on Land
Indicators: By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater
ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under
international agreements
By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity
to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development

Design Brief
As of the latest count, there were actually 7,641 Philippines Islands, as shown by the Philippine Islands
Measurements Project in 2016, a special project conducted by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority
(NAMRIA).

That's 534 islands more than what was previously known. Environment Secretary Ramon Paje, "We call them
'new.' Some of the islands were not on the map
before."Paje said three reasons were likely behind the
discovery: a) Old technology probably was unable to
detect the land masses, (b) It could be due to changing
land forms, (c) The improved detection of islands through
the use of high-resolution data.

El Nido in
Popular destinations among tourists are
Palawan, Davao, Boracay, Siargao, Cebu,
Manila and many more. The Visayas, the central island
group of the Philippines, is the heart of the country's
biodiversity. The most popular beach destination in
Visayas is Boracay: the island is popular for its pure
white sand beaches and has been a favorite island
destination for local and foreign visitors. In 2012, Boracay received the "best island" award from the international
travel magazine Travel + Leisure. Aside from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also a popular destination for
relaxation, tranquility and an exciting nightlife
2 Architectural Design 6: Site Development Planning

Project Objectives:
1.) To make the island of choice a livable one whilst retaining as much of its natural features as possible
2.) To add features to the island of choice increasing its sustainability in the face of natural or man-made disasters.
3.) To enhance/ highlight the natural features of the island of choice by coupling them with compatible/
complimentary amenities.
4.) To set the standard for facilities of the Department of Tourism as a guide to future evolution.

Design Objectives:
1.) To provide a pathway that interconnects all special features of the island of choice for ease of access. Also, to
provide an efficient gateway for essential logistics to and from the island.
2.) To provide climate-responsive facilities designed to resist the elements without the development looking like a
‘fortress’.
3.) To develop a concept/ character that simulates the functional silhouette of traditional Philippine coastal
Architecture whilst employing modern materials and more
modern/ functional geometries.
4.) To incorporate alternative utility systems (power,
communications, water supply/ treatment, etc.) for the
island of choice to operate autonomously from the
mainland.

Major Design Considerations:

1.) Transportation and Supply Logistics
2.) Alternative utility systems
3.) Aesthetics/ Functional Biomimicry
4.) Sustainability

The Potential Sites:

A. Fortune Island in Batangas was once a private
island owned by Laurentina Pestano. It was turned
over to the government and the island was now
owned by José Antonio Leviste, a former governor of
Batangas.
It used to be a luxury island resort club long owned
but was closed down in 2006. The remnants
(dilapidated facilities are no longer working) of what
it was in the past still remain.
The total stretch of the beach is at more or less 600
meters and hence needed an improvement of its
current setting.
This island has also been the site of modern
shipwrecks.

B. Us-usan Island is located between the main

island province of Guimaras and neighboring
Inampulugan Island, which is a wildlife reserve. On
August 2006, The oil tanker M/T Solar 1, carrying
more than two million liters of bunker fuel, sank at
the Guimaras Strait off the coast of the Guimaras and
Negros Occidental provinces, causing some 500,000
liters of oil to pour into the strait. The spill has

damaged Taklong Island National Marine Reserve,

a marine sanctuary for feeding and breeding
ground for fish and other species. The damage
may be felt by at least two generations and may
have damaged the reefs and mangroves, scarring
the ecosystem and causing seafood yields to
significantly decrease.

C. Capones Island is located off the coast of

Zambales. A portion of this island is being used by
the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard as a
detachment. Of note also is the existence of an old
lighthouse on the western side of the island

Note:
Select ONE (1) island only. With the choice of Us-usan, being the smallest site, designers are allowed to provide facilities
above water, whether floating or on stilts. These will be positioned near the perimeter of the coral reef on the north
side of the island. This option will not be made available for those who choose to develop Capones Island as it already
has the benefit of larger space. For Capones Island only the eastern side will be developed but the trail must extend to
the western side for access of the lighthouse. With the Fortune Island, designers are allowed to make use of the
remnants present within the site such as the Acropolis peak.

Minimum Design Requirements

1. Recreational Beach Area:
Beach Cabanas with own grill (provide at least 10 to 15) , Look-out tower, toilet, shower and footbaths, etc.
2. Nature Trail/ Pathway interconnecting amenities with scenic stops/ photo op nodes.
3. Spa Area/ Beach Massage Salas overlooking view
4. Main Pavilion :
Welcome Pavilion & Reception counter / Cafe Restaurant, Buffet or Bar / Souvenir Shop and Minimart /
Administration Office / Services
5. Recreational Pool Area : Natural pool is encouraged. Infinity-type pool also encouraged.
6. Casitas : 2 types, 1 bedroom and loft–type. Provide 24 to 30 in variety. Divide into two phases of distribution and
propose future phases if possible to provide more than 30. 8 to 10 units will be provided with its own small infinity
pools. All units will have sweeping views of the sea. 36 to 40 sqm. maximum size.
7. Tree Houses – 1 to 3 units. Position at peak point(s) 18 to 24 sqm. maximum size. Remember this is a ‘Tree House’ –
NOT A FULL BLOWN HOUSE. Proportions will be smaller than that of the Casitas but ‘creature comforts’ provided
fully.
8. Small Plantation/ Vegetable garden – size appropriately
9. Utility Areas: Power facilities, Fresh Water supply/ irrigation, Waste water treatment, Solid waste management,
Dock, etc.
10. Basic sports and recreation facilities (be creative)

NOTES:

* for other amenities feel free to use your imagination but do not over-develop the island.

* make plans as compact as possible to limit footprint.

* ‘cut and fill’ allowed but use sparingly and reasonably. Tailor-fit site elements to existing terrain and vegetation.
