Module 3 Section 3

Q#1. What are GMO, are these naturally harmful organisms?

Answer: Genetically modified organism (GMOs) are products of artificial manipulation and alteration of
a species' genetic material in a laboratory using genetic engineering. For me, these are harmful
organisms because it may cause imbalance in the ecology.

Q#2. Are these naturally occuring in our environment?

Answer: GMOs do not naturally occur in the environment.

Q#3. Give 3 advantages of GMO to society.

 Increased production of food for a growing population.

 Reduced greenhouse emissions.

 Reduced need for pesticides.

Q#4. What possible disadvantage can it cause?

Answer. Maybe the possible disadvantage is the unintended modification of similar species due to cross
pollination.

Q#5. Name the 2 scientists in the yrs 1953 n 1973 with their contribution to genetic engineering.

Answer: James Watson and Francis Crick (1953), discovered the gates for the countless possibilities of
genetic engineering. Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen (1973), they were the first scientists to genetically
modify an organism by combining genes from different organisms.

Q#6. What significant legal patent was released to EXXON OIL Co. that resulted from gen.engr. what
help or solution did it give?

Answer: The significant legal patent that was released to Exxon Oil Company is to start using a
microorganism that can consume oil. The solution it gave is to reduce CO2 emissions in cars.
