Elizabethan Religion

Catholics

Catholism is a denomination of Christianity that is based on the nicene creed. The head of the
Catholic Church is the Pope and the bible is traditional written in Latin. Catholics attend mass
every Sunday where in communion they believe that the bread and wine literally turn into Jesus
body and blood. In Elizabethan times Catholics most predominantly lived in the north of England,
especially in Lancashire and Cumbria.

Protestants
Protestantism is denomination of Christianity that was originally created by Martin Luther but
came more prominently into the public sphere when King Henry 8th adopted the religion after the
Pope refused to grant a divorce bill between him and Cathrine of Aragon. English Protestants
believe that the monarch should be the head of the church and the Bible should be written in
English. They also don’t believe in miracles and believe that churches should be more basic and
plain. Protestants lived most predominantly in London, Essex and Kent.

Puritans

Puritans were extreme Protestants that were around during Elizabethan times, they believed that
they were the superior religion to other Protestants and Catholics. They strongly opposed the rule
of bishops and wanted all superstitions and rituals abolished from Churches. They also wanted
someone who is independent to be the head of the Church.
