It may seem that Kabir is mocking the sadhus and those who make a living out of the 'god industry' I myself
see it also as a satire about society in general- where whoever dons whatever garment, they do not do
justice to that garment. Though people choose many trades and professions to make a living, they do not
immerse in that line of work honestly.

I am translating the meaning of this pada as I have understood it- not in verse but a mere translation in that
format

Doesn't colour (his/her) soul, colours only the garment

Sits cross legged in place of worship (temple/mandir)

Instead of god worships stone idols

Sitting in jungles mid austerities,

Thinks of controlling lust, and become a eunuch;
By shaving off hair and colouring (external) garment
Just pays lip service to the Gita

So says Kabir, listen to this my friend

( i do not know how to translate this yet!!)

Jis marne se jag dare, mere man mein anand

Kab maru kab paon, puran parmanand

“When everyone fears the death, I enjoy it the most. But death will be full of bliss for me
I am waiting for death which will merge me, into absolute bliss”

Chandan Jaisa Sadhu Hai Sarp Hi Sab Sansar

Taake Ang Lapta Rahe Mana Me Nahi Vikar

A good person is like a sandal tree and the world is like a snake. The snake resides on the sandal
tree but the sandal tree does not become poisonous to any extent.

Raat gawai soye ke, diwas gawaya khaay,

Hira janam anmol tha kodi badle jaye.

“Whole of your life you spoilt and wasted your time by sleeping and eating only, but remember god
has given you this birth to achieve heights, but you have made your life worthless”

Dukh mei sumiran sab kare, Sukh mei kare na koye.

Jo sukh mei sumiran kare, dukh kahe ko hoye

” Everyone remembers god in bad times, but no one in good times, If you remember him in good
times, then why should bad times should come”
Maaya taje toh kya hua, maan taja na jaye
Maan bade munivar gaye, maan saban ko khaaye

“It’s very easy to give up efforts and lose wealth. But, It’s difficult to give up the ego. Even great
and analytical people have fallen because of there egoto ego. It’s going to kill one and all.”

This Kabir doha is for those people who start to become proud of their achievements and fame and
success in life and soon their pride turns into vain.

It means that “don’t be so proud and be in vain of your achievements and fame. Don’t look at the
heights that you have achieved and be arrogant.

Ultimately tomorrow everyone has to die and you will be lyingunder the ground where grass will
grow on top.”

This couplet motivates the people to do good deeds in their life. The meaning of this Kabir doha is
that “when we are born, everyone laughs but we cry. Do good deeds in your lifetime, don’t do such
work that they laugh behind you when you are gone.”

This couplet has a very deep meaning and it illustrates the reality of today’s society in a very
beautiful way.

Firstly, I will tell you the translation and then the meaning behind it. It says, Kabir cried watching
the two grinding stones crushing the material inside.

He says everything is ground and nothing remains complete in its original form.

The real meaning of it is that Kabir cries while watching the duality in this world i.e. good and bad,
male and female, atheist and believer.

He says everyone is crushed from its original form. No one is spared.

This couplet does not need any translation. This is the most famous doha of Kabir and everyone has
listened to this in their life through songs, books, movies and many more. This couplet has been
used everywhere, from comics to speeches to movies. This doha means “whatever you need to do
tomorrow, do it now. The time is lost in moments and you will not recognise it. If the moment is
gone, the work will remain undone forever.”

Yo kál kare so áj kar

Yo áj kare so ab

Palme pralay hoyegii

Bahurii karoge kab?

–Kabir

The work which you decide to do tomorrow, do it today itself. Why should you delay it until tomorrow? The
suns rays may not penetrate into your life tomorrow. Do it today. And the work that you have decided to
do today should be done immediately, this very moment.

Hoping liberation with death!]

The Lord resides inside
Ignorant do not know this fact
They search Him outside]

Pehle Agan Birha Ki, Pachhe Prem Ki Pyas
Kahe Kabir Tub Janiye, Naam Milan Ki Aaas
[First the pangs of separation
Next grows the thirst for Love
Says Kabir then only hope
The union to materialize]
**
Jo toko kaata boien tahi boin tu phool,
tooko phool ke phool hain, vaako hain tirshul
[Lay flowers in the path of those who lay thorns in yours,
For you those flowers are flowers, but for them the flowers are tridents]
**
Bada hua to kya hua jaise ped khajoor,
Panthi ko chaya nahi, fal lage ati door.

it doesn't provide shade to travellers and it's fruit is too far to eat]
