Using captions

What are captions?


Captions are similar to subtitling and gives Deaf, deafened and
hard of hearing people access to theatre. Captioning is also helpful for customers
whose first language is not English and students who are studying the text of a play.

Ways to watch National Theatre a Home:


You can watch National Theatre at Home through any internet-connected device,
including smart TVs, smartphones, and tablets. You can also watch National
Theatre at Home on your computer using an internet browser.

National Theatre at Home App is available on Apple, Google, Amazon Fire TV and
Roku TV.

How to turn on captions

Turning on captions varies slightly depending on how you are watching videos.
To set up on a web browser on computer, tablet or mobile device

Select the CC icon in the lower right corner of the player and choose a language.

To set up Apple iOS and Android App


Select the captions icon on the lower right corner of the player and select the
language of choice:
tvOS (Apple TV)
The tvOS is an app for your Apple TV. For information on how to set this up, please

To set up captions on tvOS (Apple TV):

1. Load the video.


2. Swipe down on the touch surface on your remote.
3. The caption option will appear and a list of the captions available will appear
below it.
4. Select the caption option.

Roku TV
To watch National Theatre at Home on Roku, please add the National Theatre at
Home channel. For information on how to set this up, please visit the Help Centre:

To set up captions on Roku:

1. Press the Home button on Roku remote.


2. Scroll to the Settings option and select it.
3. Scroll to the Accessibility option and select it.
4. Select Captions Mode and select your preferred caption mode.

Amazon Fire Devices


To watch National Theatre at Home on your Amazon Fire devices, please add the
National Theatre at Home channel. For more information on how to set this up,

To set up captions on Amazon Fire:

1. Select a video to watch and start playback.


2. Press the Menu option.
3. Select Turn Subtitles On.
4. Press Menu against to go back to the video.
