6 Lesson Observation Protocol

Classroom Expectations and Behavior Management Protocol

To assist with self-management skill development,

non-verbal and verbal prompts/reminders are
provided to help students focus attention, remember/
follow instructions, and complete tasks. Students
receive extra support in the form of positive
reinforcement, supplemental guidance, and redirection.

Because Kindergarten students are new to learning

core competencies and skills in a classroom setting,
unexpected positive reinforcement is provided in the
form of “tickets.” The ticket motivation system is a
strategy that supports social and emotional learning.
When a student is making a good choice such as behaving in socially appropriate ways
that foster learning, regulating one’s emotions or actions, or focusing attention on an
activity, she or he is given a ticket. The teacher (or student teacher) stops class to
acknowledge the student, describes the extraordinary behavior or character observation
aloud, and awards the student an earned ticket. The student’s number is written on the
back of the ticket and put into a container for the weekly treasure box coupon drawing.

The ticket recognition system affirms student positive behavior choices, reinforces the
learning process, and builds a motivation momentum. Building a culture of health begins
with developing social and academic aptitude from a young age with self-knowledge,
empathy, communication skills, collaboration, and growth mindset. Incorporating SEL
(developing and regulating one’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior), directly impacts life
outcomes by producing more socially responsible and aware citizens who will be better
prepared to collaboratively create better communities, inside and outside of the classroom.
