Exercise 1: Change the following sentences into reported speech

3. REPORTED SPEECH WITH TO INFINITIVE & GERUND


Examples
1. “Will you lend me your book?” said John
(This is a request, not a question)
 John asked me to lend him my book.
2. Ann: Would you wait half an hour? ( a request) - Tom: All right
Tom agreed to wait half an hour.
3. “Why not buy another bicycle?”, Henry said
(This is a piece of advice)
 Henry advised me to buy another bicycle.
4. “Shall we prepare food for the homeless?” said our group leader.
( This is a suggestion)
 Our group leader suggested preparing food for the homeless.
5. Bill: Let me pay for myself.
Tom: Certainly not! I will pay!
 Tom insisted on paying
Reporting verbs
1. Verb+ To-infinitive
Agree (đồng ý), offer (đề nghị), refuse (từ chối), promise (hứa), threaten (đe dọa), ask (yêu cầu), ……
2. Verb + Object + To infinitive
Ask, advise, beg (xin van xin), request (yêu cầu), remind (nhắc nhở), order (ra lệnh), tell, forbid (cấm),
instruct, invite, warn (not to) (cảnh báo), encourage (khuyến khích), persuade (thuyết phục), command (ra
lệnh), dare, urge (giục),want, …….
3. Verb + Gerunds
Suggest, Admit (thú nhận), recommend (đề nghị, giới thiệu) , deny (từ chối), report, mention, and propose(đề
xuất), ……
4. Verb + preposition + gerund
Boast of (khoác lác), insist on (khăng khăng đòi), apologize to SB for ST, confess to (thú nhận), dream of,
complain about , object to (phản đối),………
5. Verb + object + preposition + gerund
Congratulate SO on, accuse SO of, warn SO against, prevent SO from, criticize SO for, compliment SO on,
thank SO for…
Note1:
1. Lời đề nghị: Would you / could you / Will you / Can you → asked + someone + to-inf
Would you mind / Do you mind + V-ing → asked + someone + to-inf
Ex: “Can you read the instructions again?” she said.
→ She asked me to read the instructions again.
He said: “Would you mind opening the door, please?”
→ He asked me to open the door.
2. Lời mời: Would you like / Will you → invited someone + to-inf
Ex: “Will you have lunch with me?” he said.
→ He invited me to have lunch with him.
3. Lời khuyên: Had better / If I were you / Why don’t you → advised someone + to-inf
Ex: “If I were you, I would phone her,” he said.
→ He advised me to phone her.
4. Lời nhắc nhở: Remember/ Don’t forget to→ remind someone + to-inf
Ex: “Don’t forget to come to the meeting tomorrow,” the manager said.
→ The manager reminded us to come to the meeting the following day..
5. Why don’t you / Why not / How about / Let’s / Shall we / It’s a good idea to → suggested + (so) + V-
ing …
Ex: “Why don’t you send her some flowers?” he said.
→ He suggested me sending her some flowers.
Ex: “Let’s meet outside the cinema,” he said.
→ He suggested meeting outside the cinema.
Ex: “It’s a good idea to go for a picnic this weekend,” she said.
→ She suggested going for a picnic that weekend.

 Trường hợp đạc biệt: Khi đổi từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp, ta không đổi thì của các câu trong dấu
ngoặc kép ở các trường hợp sau dù động tư tường thuật ở quá khứ.
+ Động từ trong câu nói trực tiếp có thời gian xác định.
Ex: She said: “I was born in 1980”
→ She said she was born in 1980.
+ Câu điều kiện loại 2. 3 hay câu mong ước (wish)
Ex: She said:” If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.”
→ She said that if she were me, she wouldn’t do that.
+ Lời nói trực tiếp diễn tả 1 chân lý.
Ex: He said “The sun rises in the East”
→ He said the sun rises in the East.
